Domamil can be explored from two different perspectives: the Church of Saint Procopius brings together several datable chapters of the town’s history, while the garden of the ZŠand MŠDomamil school adds a nature-focused touch with its lizards. Smaller cultural heritage features also include the chapel in Zákopy and a group of crosses. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether architectural history, local heritage sites or nature observation should shape your stay. This selection helps you discover Domamil according to your specific interests.
The Church of Saint Procopius
The Church of Saint Procopius was first mentioned in 1220 and is a Late Romanesque building. The year marks its first mention, not necessarily the year it was built. At the same time, the parish church has been given a Baroque makeover: its Late Romanesque classification and Baroque design refer to different layers that together make up the character of the building. Regular church services are also held here. Since 1958, the church, together with the Baroque sculptural group of Saint John of Nepomuk, has been a protected cultural monument. The sculptural group stands in front of the church and dates from 1731. If you would like to combine your visit with a church service, check the times in advance.
Another layer of history lies inside: during restoration work in 1929, Renaissance paintings were discovered beneath the plaster. They were restored in 1943 and 1969. This sequence distinguishes the discovery from the later preservation and adds a chapter of its own to the building’s history in the 20th century. Together with its Late Romanesque classification and Baroque makeover, this draws attention both to the architecture and to the rediscovered paintings.
Other cultural heritage features
Not all of the area’s cultural features are centred on the parish church. Domamil’s cultural heritage includes the chapel in Zákopy and a group of crosses. The group also includes mature trees, benches and other features as part of the ensemble. This sets it apart from a single monument: the crosses and their landscaped surroundings both deserve attention. Those who want to explore the town’s history beyond the church will find additional, different points of interest here. For a stay focused more on smaller heritage sites than on architectural periods, they offer a different emphasis.
Nature observation in the school garden
Another point of interest is the garden of the ZĹ and MĹ Domamil school. It includes a habitat formed by a stone pyramid, where visitors can observe lizards. This gives the garden a different focus from the church, sculptural group and crosses: here, the emphasis is on a habitat and the animals that can be observed. When deciding what interests to focus on during your stay, you can therefore consider cultural history and nature observation as two clearly distinct themes.
