Klárka Pond, usually called Zárubický or “Podevsí,” is one of Zárubice’s distinctive landscape features. It lies beyond the village on the road towards Hrotovice, covers 5.2 ha and is one of the largest ponds in the Třebíč District. Other highlights include a signposted long-distance cycle route through the village, local cycling routes in the surrounding forests and distinctive features of the village’s history. Water, cycling and historic architectural forms offer different ways to experience Zárubice.

Pond and Landscape Design

A varied littoral zone was created at the far end of Zárubický Pond to encourage the development of wetland plants and animals. The pond is also used for recreation. Recreational use and a deliberately designed shoreline for wetland plants and animals meet at the pond. If you are planning to swim, check the local bathing conditions in advance.

Cycling Routes Around Zárubice

Signposted long-distance cycle route 401 runs through Zárubice; local cycling routes in the surrounding forests connect to it. Another cycling tour is the Farmer’s Trail from Hrotovice to Jaroměřice. It passes through Odunec and Zárubice to the Na Skalným forest complex, which lies outside the built-up area. It is advisable to check local route conditions before setting off.

Village Green, Architectural History and Remembrance

Zárubice’s small bell tower was built in 1846 and stands in the middle of the picturesque village green, which has been preserved. The former school building was constructed in 1898. The monument to the victims of the First World War followed in 1929; a statue of a weeping woman stands in the foreground. Part of the former school building was once used as an inn and cultural hall. The building’s former school history is thus also linked here with hospitality and culture. For travellers interested in village history, this connection is a distinctive aspect of the local heritage.

Traditional houses in Zárubice were typically decorated with raised façade ornaments in the form of small squares above windows and gates. The small squares projected in relief from the façade; above windows and gates, they formed a recurring three-dimensional pattern rather than mere colour.

Local History of Excursions

In spring 2004, Toulavé kolo began exploring the surrounding area on cycling trips. One ride went to the vanished medieval settlement of Mstěnice near Hrotovice. From 2006 onwards, excursions to the so-called Bláznivý týden were also held under the auspices of Toulavé kolo. Inspired by Toulavé kolo, the group Zárubičtí chodci decided to explore the surrounding area on foot. These initiatives add a local history of exploring together to the cycling routes.
