Pine forests, long beaches, renowned vineyards, and river and coastal landscapes shape Gironde. From religious heritage to cityscapes

The heritage complex of Saint-Émilion includes a hermitage or grotto, a monolithic church, medieval monastic catacombs, and a collegiate church with a cloister. Its components illustrate different forms of religious heritage, from the hermitage to the collegiate church complex. For culture enthusiasts, this reveals the variety within the ensemble rather than focusing on just one building.

Bordeaux offers a different focus: Port de la Lune is an exceptional historic urban and architectural ensemble that took shape during the Enlightenment. Gironde has more than 1,000 listed historic monuments. Eight fortified medieval bastides lie along the routes through Bordeaux’s wine country and can be explored on foot, by bike or by boat. These different ways of getting around offer different perspectives on the bastides.

Wine routes and regional produce

Six wine routes in Gironde are suited to anyone wishing to build their trip around wine. Experiences in Bordeaux’s wine country include cellar visits, an introduction to cooperage, vineyard banquets, treasure hunts and cycling tours through the vines. These activities reveal different aspects of wine country: cellar visits, craftsmanship, the landscape or a playful exploration.

Médoc oysters are another distinctive local product: they mature for three to six months on small rafts in channels along the Gironde estuary. The maturation period and location, as well as the small rafts on which the oysters rest, are all part of this production method.

Routes through nature and landscapes

Gironde has 1,500 km of long-distance walking trails, including GR, GR de Pays, pilgrimage and themed routes. Two routes illustrate different scales: the Gironde section of the GR 6 connects Sainte-Foy-la-Grande with the Bassin d’Arcachon and is 245 km long; the Bastides et Abbayes walking route is 98 km long and runs between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The first route connects two named places, while the second is defined by the two rivers. Their lengths and the spatial orientation described for each make it easy to distinguish between them.

Landscapes and biodiversity also offer opportunities for discovery. At Banc d’Arguin, a tidal sandbank at the entrance to the Bassin d’Arcachon and a nature reserve since 1972, visitors can watch oyster farmers at work in their oyster beds and observe migratory birds. The Grand Site de la Dune du Pilat offers nature walks and activities about the dune’s habitats and biodiversity throughout the year; specific programs and dates may change. Swimming and surfing are possible on Gironde’s Atlantic beaches, although seasonal conditions and local restrictions may vary.
