Cambes offers several distinct reasons to stay: architectural history at the Église Saint-Martin, walking trails connected to the Garonne and wine country, and cultural events. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the trails by their routes and the time they take. The dates also offer different experiences: some events are tied to summer, while other activities are part of a festival whose specific programme may vary from one edition to the next. This lets you plan your visit around the experience that matters to you, rather than trying to fit everything into one day.

Église Saint-Martin: architectural history and a point on the routes

The Église Saint-Martin as a whole was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 26 February 2001. Its main construction phases date from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries; the choir contains a monumental 18th-century altarpiece. Its architectural history therefore spans several clearly defined centuries and includes a specific feature in the choir. The church is also a landmark for hikers: the Église Saint-Martin car park is the starting point for the Boucle Cambes/Baurech/Saint-Caprais de Bordeaux, while the Boucle n°6 - Cambes returns to the church.

Walking routes with different characteristics

The Boucle Cambes/Baurech/Saint-Caprais de Bordeaux is 11.4 km long, takes about three hours and is of moderate difficulty. It starts at the Église Saint-Martin car park, passes through woods and vineyards, and offers views of the Garonne Valley. This makes it possible to consider the time required alongside the scenery: the route combines a walk of around three hours with stretches through woodland and vineyards.

The Boucle n°6 - Cambes offers a different experience. It crosses a footbridge over the Garonne, follows the Grand Port and returns to the church. Another route, the Boucle Saint-Caprais-de-Bordeaux/Quinsac/Cambes, passes through three communes, between viewpoints over the Garonne Valley and vineyards. When choosing, you can therefore weigh up whether the stated distance and duration of the first route, the stretch towards the Garonne and along the Grand Port, or the route through several communes is the deciding factor.

Festival and summer evenings

Ondes de Garonne is a festival in Cambes that stretches from the hillsides to the Garonne. Events include a procession from Cambes primary school to the Petit Port, accompanied by a brass band. Schoolchildren also perform on the banks of the Garonne alongside professional musicians. The specific programme may change from one edition to the next, so check the dates for the edition you plan to attend.

In summer, Les Garonnades du Petit Port turn the square at the Petit Port into a lively meeting place every Friday evening from 7:00 to 10:30 pm. Dates and times may change. If you are planning an evening around the event, check the details for your visit period.

Wine tastings and finding accommodation

Château Haut Peyrat is located in the hills of Cambes in the Bordeaux wine region and offers tours and tastings all year round. If you are planning a visit, check availability in advance. Its year-round wine offering has a different timeframe from the summer Garonnades.

For a hike, you can factor the stated duration of about three hours into your day’s plans. If a festival or the Garonnades is the focus of your visit, plan around the relevant dates and times. For specific offers, compare location and availability before booking.
