Illats brings together Romanesque architecture, prehistoric traces, the landscape along the Ciron and specific wine-related experiences. These themes cater to different travel interests: at Église Saint-Laurent, the floor plan and portal take centre stage, while the Ciron and the walking route draw attention to the river and forest paths. The wineries, in turn, offer different experiences focused on tours, winemaking and tastings. This lets you choose a cultural, scenic or culinary focus for your stay, rather than treating all the experiences as a single programme.

Romanesque Church and Early Traces

Église Saint-Laurent is a small, single-nave church dating from the 12th century, with a semicircular apse. A single-nave floor plan has one nave; the apse forms the semicircular end. On the west façade, a Romanesque portal porch with carved voussoirs adorns the entrance. The building thus brings together a clear, simple form and the intricate design of its portal.

The protected status distinguishes between these two parts: the west portal was listed as a Monument historique by decree dated 21 November 1925; the church itself received this status by decree dated 1 September 1986. The dates therefore relate to different protected properties: the portal in one case and the church in the other.

The two megalithic alignments known as the Hountètes also point to an early period: they are traces of human presence from approximately 5,000 years ago. This dating is approximate and is not an exact construction date for the alignments. Together with the church, they extend Illats’ historical perspective across very different periods.

The Ciron and Paths Through the Landscape

The Ciron has shaped Illats’ landscape over long periods. For thousands of years, the river followed a former course of the Garonne here, carrying large quantities of sand from the Landes. Today, the Ciron flows near Illats beneath a gallery forest that creates a microclimate. The former river course and the present-day forest fringe are thus distinct aspects of the landscape.

The “BOUCLE D ILLATS” walking route follows easy forest paths through the Landes girondines and runs along the banks of the Ciron. It starts at the small car park behind the church in Illats. Check the trail conditions before setting out, as route details may change.

Wine Experiences: Tasting or Tour

At Château Vénus, the winemaking experience offers insights into the vineyard, cellar winemaking and ageing in barrels. The château also offers a guided tasting of four Graves wines: one dry white Graves and three red Graves. The experience therefore includes both insights into viticulture and winemaking and a clearly defined selection of wines to taste.

Château Jouvente offers tours, wine tastings and activities for children. On a tour, visitors can discover a 17th-century manor house, a rare underground cellar and a barrel cellar. The experiences have different focuses: at Château Vénus, the emphasis is on the vineyard, winemaking and the selection of wines in the tasting; Château Jouvente combines tours with the estate’s architectural features and also offers activities for children.

At both wineries, activities are subject to booking and availability. Check with the respective provider in advance about your preferred tour or tasting.
