Cars combines Romanesque architecture with a landscape shaped by vineyards. The Église Saint-Pierre, historic buildings and a range of wine-related offerings give the town several distinct points of interest. When planning a trip to Cars, you can focus on its architectural heritage or include visits to wineries.

Romanesque Church and Historic Buildings

The Église Saint-Pierre de Cars dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. Its bell tower is roofed with polychrome glazed tiles, creating a distinctive architectural accent. The church stands on a rock, from which there are views of sunsets over the Gironde estuary. The construction period, the tower’s design and its setting each offer a distinct connection to Cars’ history and landscape.

Opposite the church stands the 18th-century presbytery. Its courtyard contains a dovecote dating from the mid-19th century, whose roof also features coloured glazed tiles. The same material can thus be seen on different buildings and architectural elements: the church tower and the dovecote roof. The presbytery adds another historic building directly opposite the church.

Wine Landscape and Wineries

Vineyards cover 80 percent of the municipality of Cars, shaping its local landscape. The estates also each have their own story: Château La Cassagne-Boutet was built in 1690 and is one of the oldest in the municipality. Château Bel-Air La Royère covers 14 hectares and has been farmed organically since 2019. These figures describe the estates; the 14 hectares should not be understood as vineyard area alone.

Visiting arrangements vary. Château La Cassagne-Boutet offers to show visitors around the winery during their stay in the region; please make specific arrangements directly with the winery. At Vignoble Philippe de Lagarcie, tours with wine tastings are offered after contacting the estate. If you would like to plan such a visit, be sure to factor in the need to make contact first.

Château Bel-Air La Royère offers a visit with wine tasting year-round, Monday to Friday at 3 p.m. There is also a seasonal workshop where visitors make their own cuvée. The two experiences differ not only in content, but also in that the workshop is seasonal. As dates and booking conditions may change, it is advisable to confirm the current arrangements before making plans.

At Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours, visitors can climb an 18th-century crenellated tower and enjoy 360-degree views. A room themed around travel and featuring old nautical charts adds to the experience. The wine tasting includes two red wines and one white wine. The tower visit and tasting offer different ways to enjoy a visit; check the current arrangements before making firm plans.

Further architectural and winemaking details round out the picture: the main building at Château Cantinot has two turrets. Châteaux Solidaires vinifies the grapes of around ten winegrowers separately. This offers insight into a shared production model; it is not a designated visitor programme. Together with the tours and tastings offered by individual wineries, these details show how Cars can be explored through both its architectural history and different aspects of winemaking.

Plan Your Stay in Cars

When looking for a holiday rental in Cars, you could first consider which aspect matters more for your trip: the Romanesque church and historic buildings, or the wineries and their different visiting options. Some visits with tastings require you to make contact in advance; other offerings have set or seasonal arrangements. Confirm dates and current visiting arrangements wherever they are important to your plans. This will help you choose based on the experiences that genuinely interest you, without assuming that different types of visit can all be planned in the same way.
