Macau brings together traces of history and wine experiences in a landscape along the estuary. The medieval trading port, Notre-Dame Church and several châteaux offer different perspectives on the area’s history; there are also wine visits and a route through the Médoc. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on wine, architectural history or a route along the estuary.

Harbour and Historic Traces

Macau’s harbour was active as a trading port in the Middle Ages. Notre-Dame de Macau Church also has a long history: it dates back to the 12th century and retains its original bell tower. The tower has been classified as a historic monument since 1893. The harbour and church thus point to different chapters in the area’s history.

Château Cantemerle offers another glimpse into the past. The remains of a medieval motte are preserved there. The château was also part of a series of fortifications used to control the Gironde estuary. For an architectural perspective on the area, there are also the chartreuses of Macau: these houses, typical of Gascony, face the estuary along the Chemin du bord de l’eau.

Château Plaisance is protected as a historic monument. The estate includes a park, agricultural areas and a wine cellar. Together with the other architectural and historical traces, these features create a picture of a place where winegrowing and heritage exist side by side.

Wine Visits and Experiences

The visits offered at Château Cantemerle cover the vineyard, the winemaking process and the château’s history. They are followed by a guided wine tasting. Workshops on nature and well-being are also offered in the park. As visit options and workshop availability may change, check the current arrangements before planning your visit.

Château Maucamps offers visits to its winery buildings and vineyard, including a wine tasting; visits are also possible during the grape harvest. The two château experiences have different focuses: at Cantemerle, history and winemaking are explicitly part of the visit programme, while Maucamps also offers visits during harvest time. You can choose based on the topics that interest you, without treating the two offers as a single, uniform programme.

Estuary, Route and Travel

The 31-kilometre Route de l’estuaire runs from Cussac via Lamarque, Arcins, Margaux, Issan and Labarde to the port of Macau. If you include this route in your plans, check the signs and conditions before setting off. As a rail option, the Bordeaux–Le Verdon-sur-Mer TER line runs through the Médoc; Macau station is recommended as a stop. Check current TER services before your trip.

Île Macau lies opposite the harbour. It is not open to visitors, but can be viewed from the mainland. Check access arrangements again before your trip. One seasonal natural event is the Mascaret: during spring tides in August or September, it can sometimes be seen from the port of Macau. The timing depends on the tides and conditions; the period mentioned alone does not determine an observation date.
