Ligueux offers several ways to enjoy a stay: the Église Notre-Dame combines ecclesiastical architectural history with finds from earlier periods, while wine experiences and château architecture offer other highlights. A year-round picnic area adds a practical break to these themes. When deciding what to see, it is therefore helpful to consider not only the sights, but also whether you would like to focus on historic details, a wine tasting or time outdoors.

Wine Experiences and Estates

At Château Couronneau, the visitor experience includes an audio-guided biodynamic tour, a cellar visit and a wine tasting. The interactive tour takes you around the estate; 23 information panels explain the practices used there and their benefits for biodiversity. The tour focuses on these methods, while the cellar visit and wine tasting introduce other aspects of the wine experience. This puts both information about biodynamics and the wine itself in the spotlight.

At Château de Parenchère, tours with wine tasting are offered on weekdays and weekends by appointment; appointments must be made 48 hours in advance. The château is at the centre of a 188-hectare estate, of which 68 hectares are vineyards on well-exposed clay-limestone slopes. The château dates back to 1570 and is a typical example of Périgord architecture. The wine experience, estate figures and architectural history offer different perspectives on the property.

Architecture and Historical Traces

Château Couronneau also offers a striking architectural feature: its ground plan is square, with four towers pierced by gun loops, and broad moats surrounding the building. Its foundation is attributed to the 15th century. The layout, towers and moats reveal a defensive architectural style, setting the château apart from the ecclesiastical architecture and archaeological finds of the Église Notre-Dame.

The Église Notre-Dame in Ligueux dates from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It also contains a medieval gravestone decorated with a raised cross, a mortar and a hoe. These motifs provide a tangible point of reference for the historical theme alongside the dates of the church building. During restoration work beneath the church, Gallo-Roman tombs and fragments of roof tiles were found. These discoveries add a much older archaeological dimension to the church’s architectural history.

Picnics and Mountain Biking

The Ligueux picnic area is open year-round and, in dry weather, is also suitable for people with reduced mobility. The area has two tables. Nearby, there are also games for different generations, public toilets, a drinking-water point and a book box. The dry-weather condition for accessibility is a practical consideration when planning your visit.

Mountain biking is another activity on offer: the “Les Blaireaux” mountain biking club supports the sport both as a leisure activity and competitively. This distinction can help you gauge the type of sporting experience you are looking for.
