The Sentier des légendes starts at the port of Beychevelle. Other walking trails lead to vineyards, the banks of the Gironde, carrelets and marshland. Saint-Julien-Beychevelle can also be explored through winery visits and historic buildings. When planning, it is worth looking at the different activities and trails individually: they differ in what is at the heart of a visit or walk.
Wine Tastings and Visit Options
Château Léoville Poyferré offers winery tours followed by wine tastings with food pairings. The program therefore combines a visit to the winery with a wine tasting served with food.
At Château Talbot, the tour includes access to the estate’s private park and vegetable garden. It ends with a tasting of two red wines from the same vintage. A Prestige tour focuses on something different: guests taste three great Château Talbot vintages from 2016, 2010 and 2000, as well as the white wine Château Talbot Caillou Blanc 2023. To help you choose, the options can be distinguished as follows: at Léoville Poyferré, the wine tasting includes food pairings; at Talbot, the options described range from the private park and vegetable garden to a Prestige tasting of several vintages and a white wine.
Via Vinum offers another way to discover wine: this family-run wine shop is located on the village square in Saint-Julien, opposite the town hall. Isabelle and Mathieu welcome guests there throughout the year; tastings are offered during school holidays. The details of winery tours and tastings may change. Check the current terms before planning your visit.
Local History and Protected Buildings
Château Gruaud-Larose dates back to the mid-18th century. The château is protected in its entirety as a historic monument, including the tower and the agricultural hall. This protection was established by a decree dated 22 February 2012. The protected site therefore includes both of these buildings as well as the château.
People view the Church of Saint-Julien differently: some consider it exceptional, while others see it as unlike any other church in the Médoc. These views can stand side by side rather than being combined into a single judgment. The château and the church thus offer two different perspectives on the area’s heritage: Gruaud-Larose is notable for its historic origins and the scope of its protected status, while the church is notable for the differing opinions about what makes it special.
Walking Trails and a Break at the Port
Local walking trails lead through the area’s landscapes, including vineyards, the banks of the Gironde, carrelets and marshland. The Boucle de Saint-Julien-Beychevelle is a 6 km walking route that starts in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. Check the route’s access conditions before setting out. The Sentier des légendes, by contrast, starts at the port of Beychevelle.
Another trail with a similar name is the Sentier des Contes et Légendes. With a trail guide, visitors can follow a route with information panels and discover local legends. The three trail descriptions offer different points of reference to help you choose: the Boucle has a stated length, the Sentier des légendes has a starting point at the port, and the Sentier des Contes et Légendes combines information panels, a guide and legends. Picnic tables are also available at the ports in the municipality of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, where visitors can rest and eat.
