Discover Capian through its winegrowing, architectural history, and time outdoors. Visits with wine tasting are available by prior arrangement; at the same time, the vineyards and the Church of Saint-Saturnin offer different themes for your stay. A hiking route adds a longer trail through vineyards, wooded areas, and green lanes. When planning, it is worth considering scheduled visits and time outdoors at your own pace separately.
Plan Visits and Wine Tastings
Domaine de Darbalot offers visits and wine tastings by prior arrangement. A visit to Château de Potiron also requires an appointment; it lasts about two hours and includes a wine tasting as well as a look at the cellars and vineyard. This gives you different options to choose from: a visit with wine tasting at Domaine de Darbalot, or an approximately two-hour visit with a look at the cellars and vineyard at Château de Potiron. Visit arrangements may change. Contact each provider in advance, therefore, and plan according to the confirmed arrangements.
Compare Vineyards and Land
The Château de Potiron vineyard is in Capian and covers 20 hectares. It extends across south-facing, gravelly, clay- and limestone-rich slopes. The Château Suau vineyard forms a continuous area of clay- and gravel-rich slopes and plateaus; it faces south-southeast. Comparing them reveals a difference in the terrain: Potiron is characterized by southern slopes, while Suau combines plateaus with slopes. When looking at vineyards, you can use area, soil description, and orientation as separate points of reference.
The land at Château Lagrange is also described in more detail. The château is a family estate extending across Capian and La Sauve. Its contiguous vineyard covers 9.6 hectares; 4.4 hectares are planted with white grape varieties and 5.2 hectares with red varieties. The estate and the cultivated area refer to different scales: the estate spans two municipalities, while the hectare figures refer to the vineyard. Within the vineyard’s total area, the portions planted with white and red varieties are also listed separately.
At Château du Grand Mouëys, the vineyard covers 80 hectares within a 170-hectare hilly estate. The figures describe two different areas: the vineyard and the estate as a whole. This distinction helps put the sizes into perspective without equating the vineyard area with the total size of the estate.
Architectural History at Saint-Saturnin and the Châteaux
The Church of Saint-Saturnin offers several different points of reference for exploring architectural history. Its Romanesque foundation dates from the period around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. An ancient column was reused in the choir, and the architect Hosteing built the bell tower in 1896. The foundation, reused architectural feature, and dated bell tower draw attention to different aspects of the building rather than to a single construction date. Those interested in architectural history will accordingly find several points of reference here.
The histories of the named châteaux also have different points of reference. Château Suau began its history as a hunting lodge belonging to Jean-Louis de Nogaret de la Valette. At Château Couteau, the residence was built in 1850. This comparison distinguishes two kinds of historical information: Suau’s former function is the focus, while Couteau’s information is the construction year of a specific building. The history of the estates thus adds to the picture of their vineyards.
Explore the Landscape on Foot
A 14.5-kilometer hiking route near Capian passes through vineyards, wooded areas, and green lanes. It offers a different way to get to know the landscape than a visit to a winery by appointment: here, the focus is on the route and its varied sections. Check current trail conditions before setting out so that you can plan your hike according to the conditions on the day.
