The Hourtin-Carcans lake covers 6,000 hectares and is France’s largest natural freshwater lake. In Carcans, the protected eastern shore, beaches, and walking and cycling trails offer different ways to experience the lakeside landscape. When planning, it is worth looking at the specific differences: routes can be compared by length and difficulty, while beach options vary in location and facilities. This lets you plan each day around your preferred focus, rather than trying to fit every place into one itinerary.

Beaches by the lake: Maubuisson and Bombannes

Maubuisson has a 2-kilometre equipped beach on the lake. Facilities and rules may vary by season. Plage de Bombannes is a long sandy beach on the shore of Lake Carcans; supervision and facilities there may also vary seasonally. The two places offer different beach experiences: Maubuisson’s length is specified, while Bombannes is known for its long sandy beach on the lakeshore.

The supervised Plage de Maubuisson is accessible by bicycle. Activities are available there with boats, stand-up paddleboards, sailboats and pedal boats. At Plage de Bombannes, the range of activities includes tennis and beach volleyball, a high ropes course and archery, as well as surfing, wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. Tiralos are available at the lakeside beaches of Montaut, Le PĂ´le and Bombannes.

Walking: canals, dunes and land art

The Sentier des canaux is an easy 8-kilometre walking route starting in Carcans. It follows canals between Lake Carcans-Hourtin and Lake Lacanau. There is a telescope along the route for birdwatching; check before your visit whether it is operational.

In Maubuisson, the Sentier du Lac is another walking option: the 7-kilometre route runs along the dune ridge and the lake, with views of Lake Carcans-Maubuisson. Land art made from natural materials can also be found there using the “Rando Forêt littorale” app. At 7 and 8 kilometres, the two walking routes are similar in length, but differ in the character described: this one focuses on the dune ridge, lake and artworks, while the other features canals and birdwatching.

Cycling routes and different distances

The easy Tour des lacs cycle route is 55 kilometres long and starts in Carcans. It is accessible year-round; however, weather, fire risk or route restrictions may limit this general accessibility. Its length makes it a different kind of cycling day from the shorter walking routes. Check local trail conditions before setting off.

The Boucle des Cavalles offers another route option: this circular cycling route connects Maubuisson, Bombannes and Carcans-Océan. It passes through Bombannes and Carcans-Océan and starts at Place du Pôle in Maubuisson, in front of the Carcans-Maubuisson tourist office. The starting point provides a clear reference for planning, while the named places indicate the route of the loop.

A cultural contrast to the landscape

The Church of Saint-Martin is another notable feature of the area. Dedicated to Saint Martin, it was mentioned in the Middle Ages under the name “ecclesia carcanno.” The medieval building was replaced by the present-day neo-Gothic church in 1869. Inside is a polychrome wooden statue of Saint James the Pilgrim dating from the 17th century. The dedication, building history and statue each offer a distinct historical connection for visitors to the church.

Maubuisson is also home to the Maison des Arts et Traditions Populaires, at 129 Avenue de Maubuisson. Along with the church, this address adds a cultural note to the options, alongside beach days, walks and cycling trips.
