Saint-Médard-En-Jalles offers a nature-focused experience that is not limited to a single attraction. The Jalle rises west of Saint-Médard-En-Jalles and flows as far as the Garonne. The town’s character also includes year-round nature and biodiversity activities, a riverside promenade, and a historic site with restricted access. You can choose different focuses for your stay: landscapes and habitats, a puzzle trail, or local history.

Wetland and nature activities

Near Bois des Sources, a wetland is home to dragonflies, amphibians and typical vegetation, including black alders. This example shows that nature here is more than just a landscape: plants and wildlife come together. Saint-Médard-En-Jalles is part of the Parc des Jalles. Walks and events take place there year-round, and measures are also being implemented to promote biodiversity. The town and its partners also offer nature excursions, educational workshops and opportunities to encounter local wildlife throughout the year. This year-round focus gives the nature theme a timeframe that is not tied to a single event date.

Puzzle trail and paths along the Jalle

The Tèrra-Aventura puzzle trail Escal en Jall combines outdoor activity with plant heritage, biodiversity and the town’s history. It takes about 1.5 hours and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Check the latest route information before setting off, as details may change. A different perspective is offered by the riverside promenade at the Bords de Jalle de Gajac: it follows the Jalle to the sources of Thil and Gamarde. The Bords feature water installations, plant islands, a plant maze and an arboretum. The two options therefore differ: Escal en Jall focuses on the puzzle trail and its themed content, while the Bords feature a riverside route and landscaped plant and water features.

Local history and watching horses

On the grounds of the Poudrerie, Jehan Dupérier acquired a plot of land on which he had six powder mills built, known as “Les moulins à poudre du Roy.” The historic entrance to the Poudrerie at Espace Dupérier is still visible. The grounds beyond the gate are closed to the public, except for one section used by certain associations. At Château de Belfort, paths border the grounds; walkers and spectators can watch horses and riders in action there. The distinction is clear: the Poudrerie combines a historic trace with restricted access, while at Château de Belfort you can watch horses and riders in action.
