Listrac-Médoc can be explored through three specific themes: Médoc wine, trails through vineyards and forests, and local craftsmanship. The appellation’s red wines are distinctive and rich in tannins, yet powerful and rounded: Cabernet Sauvignon provides power, while Merlot contributes roundness and fruitiness.
Wine and Landscape
The appellation area lies mainly on a gravel terrace; to the west, the forest massif protects it from ocean winds. The gravel terrace and the protection provided by the forest massif describe the landscape, while the grape variety information distinguishes the wine’s profile.
Château Liouner offers tours, tastings, and the opportunity to discover the vineyard year-round. Various events are also held depending on the season. Visits require a reservation and offerings may change; check the details in advance and ask about the seasonal program.
Wine and exercise come together at the Tournée des Cuviers, held annually on the Saturday of Easter weekend. It is open to walkers, hikers, and runners. The event offers circular routes of 8 and 17 km; in some years, a 21-km route is also added. The routes pass through vineyards and by the châteaux of the AOC Listrac-Médoc. For the Tournée, participating winemakers open their cellars and wine-making facilities, where participants can taste Listrac wine. Check the date and registration arrangements for the specific edition, as both may change.
Circular Trails and Activities
The Sentier du Grand Riou is an easy 14-km circular trail through the vineyards and forests of Listrac-Médoc. It runs mainly along vineyard paths and forest tracks and presents no particular difficulties. Local trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
The route lengths offer a concrete comparison: an 8-km loop of the Tournée is shorter than the 14-km Sentier; the 17-km loop and the 21-km loop offered in some years are longer. This lets you compare the two hiking options by distance without assuming a walking time.
Another activity offered by the Listrac-Médoc Tourist Office is a treasure hunt using a free geocaching app. Several caches are located in the town’s forest.
Craftsmanship and Architectural History
Les Grès Médocains is a family-run brickworks and pottery workshop in Listrac-Médoc. Guided tours and pottery workshops are available by reservation. During school holidays, discovery workshops combine a guided tour of the production site with working with clay and making an object. Offerings and how they are run may change; confirm reservation requirements and current visit details in advance.
Two construction phases can be distinguished at Église Saint-Martin: the Romanesque choir dates from the 12th century, while the square bell tower was built in the 16th century. A short stone spire crowns the tower.
The town’s elevation is also a distinctive feature: Listrac-Médoc reaches 43 metres, making it the highest point in the Médoc.
