Arsac has a strong focus on culture and wine: contemporary artworks in the park of Château d’Arsac sit among a landscape shaped by vineyards, while Église Saint-Germain combines Romanesque features with later alterations. Tours at wineries and the weekly market in the town centre round out the picture. You can tailor your stay to art, architecture or winemaking.
Art in the park of Château d’Arsac
Since the 1990s, Château d’Arsac has welcomed leading artists to its park, turning the estate into an open-air museum. Today, the park houses more than 20 contemporary artworks. An artistic walk leads through the vineyards, where monumental sculptures emerge in the landscape. The château is classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel; its architecture combines historic splendour with modern design.
Château d’Arsac also offers the oenological and musical tour “Si Arsac m’était chanté”. If you plan to take this tour, check availability in advance. Art, architecture and winemaking come together here under one theme, without requiring the same kind of visit to be the focus.
Romanesque traces at Église Saint-Germain
Église Saint-Germain was completely remodelled in the 19th century by the architect Gustave Alaux. A Romanesque portal with four archivolts on the south façade is all that remains of its original construction. The church is classified as a historic monument; the south portal is excluded from this designation. The 19th-century remodelling and an older architectural feature therefore stand side by side.
The walls feature funeral paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries bearing the coats of arms of a lord’s family. Protected furnishings in the south chapel include the altar, altarpiece and tabernacle. Those interested in architectural history will find several distinct periods represented here: the Romanesque portal, Gustave Alaux’s remodelling and the medieval paintings.
Winemaking and tours
Winemaking in Arsac falls within the Margaux and Haut-Médoc appellations. At Château du Tertre, the 52-hectare wine estate was classified as a Grand Cru Classé Margaux in 1855; its area has barely changed since. The “Dans les pas du Tertre” and “La privative” tours each include a tasting of two and three wines, respectively.
Vignobles Bernaleau welcomes visitors year-round for tours in French and English. Book appointments by email or phone, Monday to Friday. A simple wine tasting is also available by appointment. There is also a comparative tasting of Margaux and Haut-Médoc wines from the same vintage—a practical way to compare two appellations using wines from the same year.
Tours and tastings are also available at Château Mongravey: they take place by appointment, Monday to Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The château is classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in the AOC Margaux. Château des Graviers welcomes visitors by appointment only. Its 13-hectare vineyard lies on Pyrenean gravel ridges separated by small natural streams; in 2012, the winery switched to organic viticulture. Arrangements and visitor offers may change, so it is advisable to check in advance.
Town centre and activities
The weekly market is held in the town centre, on Place Camille Godard, and is part of a wider programme to bring the village to life. As market times and offerings may change, check the dates if you plan to time your visit around it.
The FFRandonnée Gironde ARSAC BR® 38 route starts in front of the sports hall at Collège Panchon. It is designated a red “Balade à Roulettes®”. Alongside art, church architecture and winemaking, Arsac therefore also offers a specific starting point for planning a route. You can choose visits to suit your interests; for wine tours, remember to make any required appointments.
