Discover Lacanau through its lake, coastal landscape, surfing opportunities and architectural history. While Lac de Lacanau combines nature watching, recreational activities and water sports, the Sentier de La Berle explores the history of the coastal marshes. Churches, a museum and L’Escoure round out the picture with architecture, local collections and events.
At Lac de Lacanau: Nature and Water Sports
Lac de Lacanau brings together several attractions for different kinds of day out: nature watching, recreational activities and water sports. The lake covers about 20 km². There are designated zones for kitesurfing, and four slipways are available for launching boats. Before your trip, check the current rules and zones for kitesurfing; before using the slipways, it is also worth checking the latest access rules, as these may change.
Coastal Marshes and Protected Landscape
The Sentier de La Berle offers a different experience from water sports on the lake: along this 2.5 km trail, designated a “protected area,” visitors can learn about the history of the coastal marshes. The trailhead is on Rue du Général-de-Gaulle in Lacanau Ville. Check local access information, as ground conditions can vary seasonally.
On the eastern shore of Lac de Lacanau, the Réserve Biologique Dirigée de Vire vieille, Vignotte et Batejin covers 215 hectares. Compared with the lake, which covers around 20 km², it is a smaller landscape area and a distinct nature attraction.
Surfing Opportunities and Club History
The history of surfing here is linked to the Lacanau Surf Club, founded in 1968. Its Club-Loisirs program is open to all ages, from five years old through adulthood, and includes surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding. Separate from this are surf lessons, tailored to age and skill level and offered in small groups of six to eight participants. The sport, age range and group size offer different points of reference when choosing an activity. The club offers surf lessons for booking and rents out surfboards and wetsuits. Program details may change; check the current terms before booking.
Architecture, Culture and Getting Around
Architecture and local history are also part of Lacanau’s character. The Église Notre-Dame des Flots was built in 1964 and bears the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label. Its year of construction and designation offer two different ways to understand the building. The Église Saint-Vincent has been restored and is a prominent landmark at the entrance to Lacanau Ville.
L’Escoure, a public venue for events, exhibitions and films, is located at the entrance to Lacanau Océan. Since the program may change, check the latest listings before your trip.
A museum in an 18th-century house tells the story of Lacanau; its five themed rooms display collections related to the local heritage. Check the opening arrangements before visiting.
The Lacanau Océan tourist office is open year-round and helps visitors during their stay in Lacanau; check its current availability before your trip.
