Montussan combines traces of cultural history with cycling opportunities: its church, old roads and a washhouse offer insights into local history, while the La Laurence trail adds an active option. Anyone planning a stay can explore different aspects of the area.

Church and historic roads

The new Saint-Martin church was handed over for worship on March 29, 1903, even though it was still unfinished. The date therefore marks its handover for use, not the completion of construction. This distinction offers an insight into local history: worship began before the church building was finished. The church’s history can thus be tied to a specific event and the particular state of its construction at the time.

A small paved section of a Gallo-Roman road is still visible on Route de la Rafette. The former fiefdom of La Mothe-Montussan offers another perspective: the Roman road from Bordeaux to Vésone divided the fiefdom and was used in the Middle Ages. This brings into view both a visible remnant of the road and its historical role in the fiefdom. Together, these details give the history of transport a material and a historical dimension.

Washhouse and landscape

A washhouse was built between the two world wars and was an important place in community life. During the 2021 Heritage Days, walks explained the village’s history, and cleaning work was also carried out at a washhouse. The program thus combined sharing local history with practical work. These details add a glimpse of community life to the history of the church and roads.

The landscape includes forests, vineyards and valleys. The river La Laurence forms the boundary of Montussan. These features broaden the cultural-historical perspective to include the landscape that shapes the area. Anyone planning a trip with an interest in history and the surrounding area will find both architectural and landscape points of interest here.

The La Laurence trail

This mountain biking trail, which mainly follows paths, passes through Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac, Saint-Loubès, Yvrac, Montussan, Sallebœuf, Beychac-et-Caillau and Pompignac. Depending on the route chosen, it covers 23, 36 or 46 kilometres. The three distances offer a practical comparison when choosing a ride: you can use your preferred distance as the starting point for your plans. The trail was created by the club in 2010 and approved by the Conseil Départemental. It is currently managed by UFOLEP; this responsibility may change. Before setting out, check the latest route information, as local route details can change.
