Petit-Palais-et-Cornemps brings together wine, landscape and architectural history in three distinct ways: at Château Vieux Mougnac, on the 5.7-kilometre circular walking trail, and at churches dating from the 11th and 13th centuries. So when choosing the focus of your stay, it matters whether you prefer a vineyard tour that requires a reservation, a walk or specific architectural details.

Walk through forests and vineyards

The Petit Palais and Cornemps circular walking trail is 5.7 kilometres long and leads through forests and vineyards. It combines nature with architecture. The walk places both themes at its centre, while the churches draw attention to the architectural history and design of individual buildings. This makes the loop different from a visit focused on portal design or historic building features. The distance provides a concrete reference point for planning your day; check the route details again before setting out.

Churches with distinct architectural histories

The Église Saint-Pierre dates from the 13th century and was classified as a historic monument in 1846. It is open to visitors. Its entrance portal consists of five recessed round arches supported by columns. The arches divide the portal into several levels set back from one another. In addition to the building’s age, the design of the entrance offers a concrete starting point for taking a closer look at the church’s architecture.

The church in Cornemps dates from an earlier period: it was built in the 11th century and is listed as a historic monument. Its 15-metre-long western section lies in ruins. The roughly hewn corbel brackets beneath the cornice feature human figures or animal heads. Corbels are projecting supports beneath a cornice; here, the motifs draw attention to the sculptural details. In contrast to the portal design at Saint-Pierre, Cornemps stands out for its greater age, ruined section and figural corbels.

The miraculous spring of Cornemps is also still there. It adds another element of local tradition to the architectural heritage.

Vineyard tours and tastings

Château Vieux Mougnac is located at 36 route de Mougnac, 33570 Petit-Palais-et-Cornemps. Vineyard tours are available there every day of the year by reservation. Book your tour in advance; tours and tastings are offered in French or English.

The offerings also include tastings of rare wines suitable for ageing. These wines are sold exclusively at the estate. The tour and the tasting each have a different focus: one turns your attention to winegrowing, the other to the distinctive qualities of wines suitable for ageing.

The offerings differ mainly in how you need to prepare for the day: a reservation is required for the vineyard tour, while you should check the walking route details again before setting out. The Église Saint-Pierre is open to visitors. This allows you to treat booking, checking the route and visiting the church as three separate planning items.
