Coutras developed at the confluence of the Isle and Dronne rivers. The town’s history includes the Renaissance Puits Henri IV fountain, Romanesque features of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Merovingian sarcophagi. There is also a covered market hall and a historical walking tour. This allows you to shape your stay around different interests: with a clearly defined walk focused on local history and heritage preservation, or with an emphasis on the river landscape and outdoor activities.

Renaissance, Church and Local History

The Puits Henri IV was built in 1551 during the Renaissance. It is the only surviving remnant of Coutras Castle, which was destroyed in 1731. A protection order dated 6 August 1956 lists the fountain as a historic monument. This site therefore brings together the building’s origins, the history of the castle and its current protected status.

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste also brings together several historical layers. The surviving parts of its Romanesque structure are the eastern end of the ambulatory, the choir and the square bell tower; these elements were built at the end of the 12th century. Under a listing order dated 21 December 1925, the apse and the adjoining bay, which is vaulted with a dome, are protected as historic monuments. Merovingian sarcophagi discovered beside the church remain visible inside. Romanesque architecture, the protection of specific elements and the sarcophagi offer visitors different ways to engage with the history of the town.

The covered market hall represents another chapter in the town’s history: it was inaugurated in 1935. Together with the older historic buildings, it offers a broader view of Coutras’s development over several centuries.

A Walk with a Set Time Frame

The “Balade au fil de l’histoire et du patrimoine de Coutras” is a self-guided walking tour where you can discover the town’s buildings, monuments and history. The route starts in Coutras, is 6 kilometres long, is rated easy and is designed to take one hour. This gives you a specific time frame for a walk focused on the town’s heritage. The distance and duration make it easier to fit this activity in alongside other things to do, without treating it as a full day of sightseeing.

For those primarily interested in history and architecture, the walking tour is a clearly described option. The historic sites also each offer their own focus: the Puits Henri IV centres on the Renaissance and the history of the castle, while the church features Romanesque elements and visible sarcophagi. The market hall adds a 20th-century building to the mix.

River Landscapes and Outdoor Activities

The municipality of Coutras is affected by three Natura 2000 sites. These include the Isle Valley, which stretches from Périgueux to its confluence with the Dordogne. The valley provides a habitat for the European mink and the European pond turtle.

Lac des Nauves consists of two ponds. Another option on the water is the “Base canoë-kayak et paddle de Coutras”, which offers canoe, kayak and paddleboarding trips on the Dronne in a natural setting. In the wider area, all forms of fishing are possible on the Isle and Dronne rivers. The ponds, trips on the Dronne and fishing on the two rivers are different ways to enjoy outdoor activities during your stay.

The connection between a motorhome pitch and the town centre is also useful for getting around: the motorhome parking area at the former Frais Rivage campsite is directly connected to the centre via the Passerelle du Vieux-Pont. Pedestrians and cyclists can easily reach the town centre using it.

The one-hour walking tour can be included as a manageable cultural activity. If you prefer other focuses, you can consider the walking and sports opportunities at Lac des Nauves or trips on the Dronne. Coutras thus combines local history with several different ways to spend time outdoors.
