Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle combines protected natural areas, historic buildings and waterside leisure activities. The different walks and trail options also help you plan excursions around the time you have available.

Nature Trails and River Landscapes

Because of its proximity to the Isle, parts of Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle lie within a Natura 2000 site. It was designated for the high value and vulnerability of its biodiversity. L’Aubarède forms a biological corridor with breeding, resting and feeding grounds for migratory birds. Public hiking trails provide access to the area; allow about 1.5 hours for a discovery walk. As trail conditions can vary, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The Domaine du Petit Bois offers a different scale of walk: the grounds cover 30 hectares of woodland and undergrowth, with a 2.5-kilometre loop and four kilometres of smaller paths. In spring, you can admire five orchid species there. The loop and smaller paths offer different distances to help you plan your walks.

Leisure Activities on the Isle

The Base de loisirs is located on the banks of the Isle and covers three hectares. It is designed for families, with water features, lawns, shade and play structures. It includes a family fishing area designated a “parcours famille” by the Fédération Nationale de la Pêche en France. There is also an adapted fishing platform accessible to people with disabilities. As maintenance or on-site conditions may affect the facilities, it is best to check their status before visiting.

The Plage de Saint-Seurin-sur-l’Isle is also on the river. It has white sand, showers, toilets, lighting, shaded lawns and parking. Facilities and bathing conditions may vary seasonally or temporarily, so check conditions in advance if you are planning a visit around the beach.

Paddleboarding lessons and training are available at the Halte nautique de la Charbonnière; canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards can be hired seasonally, including for trips down the Isle. The canoe-kayak club allows you to paddle freely by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard in and around the site. It offers lessons and training year-round, as well as canoe and kayak hire in summer for river trips and freestyle kayaking. Activities and availability may change, so check the relevant conditions in advance if needed.

Discover the Heritage on Foot

The Église Romane of Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle is first mentioned in the 13th century under the name Sanctus-Severinus. However, the architecture of part of the church attests to its existence as early as the 12th century. Another historic landmark is the Moulin de Logerie: the first known document about the mill dates from 1547. It stands across an arm of the Isle on the Îlot du Courneau. At the Tour Buthaud, you can see a fresco by the painter and ceramic artist René Buthaud.

The one-hour “au coeur de la ville” walk takes in several noteworthy sites and focuses on the heritage of Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle. For families with children aged six and over, the “Pistes de Robin” is a tourist puzzle trail that explores local history and monuments through riddles, questions and drawings. Another themed trail, the Tèrra-Aventura route, covers the town’s history, its industrial past, and local wildlife and plant life along the water. The route opened in July 2021; check its current status before your visit.

The Passerelle Soustre has been open to the public since it was built. It gives walkers access to hiking trails on the opposite bank, which lead from the town centre to the beach, and offers a distinctive view of the river. For horse and pony riding, the Centre équestre Pierre Durand offers sporting and leisure activities; specific activities and availability may change.

Different timings can help you plan your day: the town walk takes one hour, while the discovery walk in L’Aubarède takes about an hour and a half. This lets you give more or less time to heritage and nature, depending on how much time you have available.
