In Blaye, a cultural stay takes you from the citadel’s fortified history to the themes of the Gironde estuary. The Citadelle de Blaye and the Verrou de l’estuaire have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 7 July 2008. The Vauban Lock at the Gironde estuary comprises three fortifications: the Citadelle de Blaye, Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc. This trio provides a historical starting point for a visit; other attractions explore navigation, the natural environment and everyday life at the estuary.

The Citadel’s History and Life at the Estuary

The Musée d’Archéologie et d’Histoire de Blaye is housed in a former civil and military prison that was converted into a bakery in the early 19th century. Archaeological finds illustrate 7,000 years of the citadel’s history. A model of the medieval castle and plans showing the fortress’s development offer different perspectives across time; collections on everyday life and the bakery add insight into how the site was used.

The Centre d’Interprétation de l’Estuaire de la Gironde takes a different approach. Its themes include maritime occupations, boats typical of the Gironde estuary, and activities such as fishing and hunting. It also covers the estuary’s fauna and flora and how they have changed over the centuries. The history of a fortress and the estuary’s natural environment and way of life thus offer distinct perspectives on the region.

Cruise and Underground Passages

The one-hour cruise on the Gironde departs from the nautical landing stage on Rue Pierre Sémard, at the foot of the citadel in Blaye town centre. It offers views of Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc and insights into the estuary’s distinctive natural environment. The cruise brings together views of the fortifications and the river landscape. Since timetables may vary, check departure times before your trip.

A guided tour of the Citadelle de Blaye takes you through underground passages and explains the defensive system established by Vauban. Soldiers used the passages to repel possible attacks. The tour is listed as covering 1.2 kilometres and around one hundred steps. For planning purposes, the cruise is defined by its one-hour duration, while the tour is described by its distance and steps. Check the timetable and tour programme in advance; schedules and programme details may change.

More Experiences and Practical Information

The “Mystères de la Citadelle” Explor Game is a digital outdoor treasure hunt in the Citadelle de Blaye. It lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. This is close to the length of the one-hour cruise, but the experiences differ: the game centres on a digital quest in the citadel, while the cruise offers views of the forts and natural surroundings from the water.

The “Balade à roulettes: Ville de Blaye” starts at the Porte Royale. There is a car park in front of the entrance to the citadel; check parking arrangements before you arrive, as they may change. Another sightseeing option is Château Marquis de Vauban, a 600-metre walk from the Citadelle de Blaye. It offers commentary on the vineyards and wine cellars, as well as a tasting of three red AOC wines from Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. Availability may vary; check in advance whether the tour and tasting are being offered.
