Arbanats offers several ways to explore its culture: the architectural history of Saint-Hippolyte Church, the architecture of Château d'Arbanats, historic washhouses and a tour through the vineyards. Two walking routes add to these attractions. When planning your visit, it is worth noting the different time frames involved: the buildings’ history spans several centuries, while the vineyard tour requires a reservation and has a set minimum duration.

A building history spanning several stages

Saint-Hippolyte Church in Arbanats dates from the second half of the 15th century. It was expanded in the 16th century with the addition of side aisles, and its neoclassical façade was built in the 18th century. Its origins, expansion and façade design can thus be distinguished as three construction phases. If you are interested in architecture, the church offers more than a single date of origin: its architectural history spans several centuries.

Château d'Arbanats was completed in 1783. Alongside this date, the arrangement of its floors is another distinctive feature: the ground floor is lower than the upper floor, which contains apartments and reception rooms. Unlike the church, whose architectural history spans several centuries, the château is notable for its completion date and the different uses of its upper floor. These provide two specific architectural perspectives to compare: the evolution of a church building and the layout of the château.

Water, walking routes and vineyards

The Fontaine de La Fontanette has medieval origins. Its water can be collected in a basin that was used as a wash place. The Pontet washhouse is a small open-air wash place beside a stream, which is fed by the spring outflow from the La Hontière washhouse. The two places bring water and washing together in different ways: one has a basin, the other a place beside a stream. This adds a specific aspect of everyday life to the architectural history of the church and château.

For a walk, there is the short local route “Petit parcours (boucle locale)” and, separately, the long route “Grand parcours”. Their names distinguish the two options as a short local loop and a long route. As route details may change, check them before setting out.

The vineyard tour, which requires a reservation, takes place in a vintage Méhari or a Jeep Willys and includes a drive with a leisurely tasting. The minimum duration is 1 hour and 15 minutes. An epicurean picnic is also offered; departure is between 12 and 1 p.m., and the minimum duration is 1 hour and 45 minutes. The difference is clear when planning your day: the picnic option’s minimum duration is 30 minutes longer than that of the drive with tasting, and departure is within a set time window.

Arbanats offers a range of experiences: architectural history with clearly dated stages, places where water and washing come together, walking routes and a tour that requires a reservation. You can choose which to focus on according to your interests and, for the vineyard tour, also take the minimum duration into account, along with the departure window for the picnic option.
