Saint-Pey-de-Castets lies among rolling hills, vineyards and the Dordogne Valley. With the Church of Saint-Pierre and the former priory, the village has a clearly identifiable cultural focal point. Alongside culture and landscape, Restaurant L’Épicurial brings French cuisine made with fresh regional produce into view.

Church of Saint-Pierre and Former Priory

The Church of Saint-Pierre and the remains of the former priory were listed as historic monuments by decree of 30 April 1999. The complex brings together a Romanesque church, some of whose masonry dates from the 11th century, and the most important foundation of La Sauve-Majeure Abbey in the Entre-Deux-Mers. The dates should be distinguished: the 11th century refers to parts of the masonry, not to the church as a whole; the 1999 decree designates the listing as a monument. Thus, the building’s history and its formal protected status stand alongside one another.

Panoramic Views and Circular Route

From the church, the panorama stretches across the municipality to the area around Saint-Émilion. The “De Branne à Blasimon” circular route passes Saint-Pierre in Saint-Pey-de-Castets and recommends stopping to admire the view. In this way, the route combines a historic stop with a specifically noted landscape vista. For directions, it reaches the village via the D126 and leaves it via the D18 towards Sainte-Florence.

Landscape and River Setting

The local landscape includes wooded slopes, vineyard foothills, meadows bordered by hedges and trees, as well as extensive vineyards and orchards. The mix can be read as an alternation between wooded and open areas: hedges and trees line the meadows, while vineyards and orchards represent the agricultural side of the surroundings. The wine-growing landscape is therefore part of a more varied mosaic, not its only element.

The Gamage is a small tributary of the Dordogne that flows through Saint-Pey-de-Castets. It is the local watercourse, while the Dordogne Valley provides the broader landscape setting. Two geographic scales therefore sit side by side: a small river that runs through the municipality and the wider valley in which Saint-Pey-de-Castets is located.

The Dordogne has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2012. In addition, the municipal area is covered by the La Dordogne Natura 2000 site (FR7200660) under the “Habitats, Fauna and Flora” Directive. The areas covered are different: the UNESCO designation identifies the Dordogne as a Biosphere Reserve; the Natura 2000 site applies to the municipal area. Both details relate to the natural environment, but they do not describe the same geographic scope.
