Libourne lies at the confluence of the Isle and Dordogne rivers, at the upper end of the Gironde estuary. Its port-side bastide is considered an essential stop between Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion. Remnants of fortifications, a museum and street art give the city cultural character; parks and leisure activities offer other ways to enjoy your stay.

Bastide, history and art

The Tour du Grand Port is the most significant and best-preserved remnant of the fortifications that surrounded the bastide of Libourne in the first half of the 14th century. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Condat is also part of the city’s early history: it is considered Libourne’s historical origin, predating the founding of the bastide.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie presents its permanent collection on the second floor of the town hall. The Chapelle du Carmel serves as an exhibition venue for temporary exhibitions, with two held each year. As the exhibition schedule and access may change, check the latest dates before your visit. Another way to experience art is the street-art trail: designed as an open-air museum, it brings street art to Libourne.

Loop trail, parks and lakeside activities

The Boucle Libournaise is a 24.5-kilometre circular walking route. It is also accessible to people with reduced mobility, pushchairs and bicycles; check the access conditions before setting out. Information panels along the route highlight Libourne’s cultural, historical and landscape features. The trail therefore combines exercise with insights into the city.

The Parc de l’Epinette is a wooded park covering 24,500 square metres. Its features include an arboretum of centuries-old trees, a pond, a children’s playground, and areas for walking and relaxation. It is therefore quite different from the Boucle: here, you will find several park areas in one place, while the Boucle is designed as a long circuit.

The Plaine de loisirs des Dagueys is a supervised swimming and leisure area. Activities include sailing, rowing, fishing, climbing and mountain biking. A walking promenade, a viewpoint, a beach, a toddlers’ pool, play areas and wooded spaces complement the jogging path around the lake. Supervision hours and activity availability may vary seasonally.

Canoë Kayak Sport Libourne (CKSL), based at the Les Dagueys nature site in Libourne, offers canoeing and kayaking. Its activities are open to people of all ages and skill levels. If you are planning a specific visit, check the latest operating dates.

Market and local produce

The Sunday market takes place in the bastide, the historic heart of the city. It offers fresh, farm-fresh, organic and local produce, spices and artisanal products. As market days and arrangements may change, check in advance that the market is taking place on your chosen Sunday.
