Gujan-Mestras combines oyster farming and maritime history with waterside paths and the birdlife of the “Bassin d’Arcachon et banc d’Arguin” area. Several different themes can guide your travel planning: port and cultural history, habitats important to birds, walking routes with different characteristics, and guided sea-kayaking tours. Whether you want to focus your stay more on oyster farming, nature or activities on the water can be decided by considering specific places and activities.
Oyster Farming and Maritime History
The Maison de l’Huître introduces visitors to the work of oyster farmers, oyster-farming techniques and the history of oysters. At Port de Larros, different periods come together: the port was built in 1883 and was an important sardine fishing port between the two world wars. Today, visitors can see oyster huts, sample oysters and visit boatyards. The Maison focuses on the profession, farming techniques and the history of oysters, while Port de Larros brings its port history together with visitor experiences available today.
Another detail of cultural history can be found in Église Saint-Maurice. It houses a stone statue dating from 1615 that may represent Saint Maurice; it was classified as a protected object in 1969. The identification as Saint Maurice is uncertain. This sacred work of art thus adds a different historical perspective to the maritime history.
Habitats and Birdlife
Gujan-Mestras is one of the municipalities in the “Bassin d’Arcachon et banc d’Arguin” area. The area includes sandy islands, mudflats with seagrass, cordgrass and glasswort, fish ponds and a delta. These habitats provide particularly favourable conditions for birdlife. For travellers who want to consider nature as well as local and port history, this creates a distinct focus: the diversity of habitats and their importance for birds.
Paths, Park and Guided Tours
The Sentier du littoral de Gujan-Mestras is 8.5 kilometres long and runs from Port de La Hume to Port de La Mole. The route follows the waters of the Bassin d’Arcachon, salt marshes, oyster ports and former fish ponds. The walking path in Parc de la Chêneraie offers a different landscape: it is mostly wooded and passes, among other things, cork oaks and the clear waterfalls of former lock systems. The Vélodyssée also passes through the municipality of Gujan-Mestras.
Guided sea-kayaking tours along the Gujan-Mestras coast are offered from Port de La Hume with a state-certified instructor. Unlike a walk or coastal path, these tours let you experience the coast on the water and as part of a guided excursion. If you plan to join a tour, check dates and availability before you travel.
Different features may help you choose: the Sentier has a specified length and endpoints, the walking path in Parc has a mostly wooded character, and the sea-kayaking tours offer a guided activity on the water. This lets you choose based on route length, landscape type or tour format, without treating the activities as interchangeable excursions.
