Preignac’s heritage can be explored through various traces: two châteaux connect the town with the Sauternes and Graves appellations, while a playful walking trail explores the village’s history. There is also a preserved ship model with a specific connection to the David family and the port of Preignac. This offers a choice of ways to plan your trip rather than a single must-see itinerary: architecture, local history and practical information sit side by side.
Châteaux and appellations
Château Bastor-Lamontagne is located in Preignac, in the Gironde department, at the heart of the Sauternes appellation. Château de Malle extends across Preignac, Toulenne and Fargues and is located in the Sauternes and Graves appellations. Its classical and Renaissance architecture led to its listing as a historic monument. These details reflect different geographical scopes: Bastor-Lamontagne is clearly situated in Preignac, while Malle links three communes and two appellations. This distinction helps avoid reducing the destination to the story of a single château. If you are interested in architecture, Malle’s protected status places it in its historical context; Bastor-Lamontagne, by contrast, has a clear connection to the heart of the Sauternes appellation.
A walking trail and a single cultural object
Les Pistes de Robin takes a different approach. This self-guided, playful family walking trail explores Preignac’s little-known history and showcases the village’s architectural and natural heritage. The story is therefore told not only through châteaux but also through a trail that brings together the built and natural heritage. Its self-guided format makes it a distinct way to explore; check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
A single object offers a precise counterpoint. A large, detailed ship model is preserved in Preignac as an ex-voto. It was donated by the David family from the port of Preignac and depicts the Renommée. The specific connections are thus clear: the David family donated the model, and the Renommée is the ship it depicts. Alongside the broader walking trail, a particular object takes centre stage. This contrast shows two different ways of exploring the village’s history: a route focused on local heritage and a single cultural object.
Practical information
Château d’Armajan des Ormes is open Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm; check the opening hours before visiting. According to the château, the SNCF Preignac stop is 1.5 km from the Château de Malle estate. If you plan to travel by train, check the connections for your travel date.
