Martignas-sur-Jalle offers a range of things to enjoy during a stay: walking trails along the La Jalle, wetlands and heathland, as well as art, astronomy and a memorial. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different landscapes and ways to visit—especially where access must be arranged in advance.
Wetlands and heathland: nature with two distinct profiles
La Jalle is a river area in Martignas-sur-Jalle and is suitable for walks. It has been designated a Natura 2000 site since 2000. A footpath has been created along the wetlands, guiding walkers along a designated route. The focus here is therefore both on the protected landscape and on a specific route through the wetlands.
Camp de Souge offers a different focus: it is designated a type 2 ZNIEFF and covers 2,855 hectares of natural habitats. These are considered an ecological conservation area and are among the last remaining original Atlantic wet heaths of Gascony. Notable species include the azure blue butterfly (azuré des mouillères), the marsh fritillary (fadet des laîches), the European nightjar (engoulevent d’Europe), the European pond turtle (tortue cistude d’Europe) and the intermediate sundew (droséra à feuilles intermédiaires).
Walking plan, footpath and orientation
The Promenades arborées martignassaises is a municipal walking plan that lets you explore Martignas-sur-Jalle. The routes can be covered on foot or by bicycle. The municipality provides a downloadable map. You can use the downloadable map to plan your routes through the municipality; the municipal walking plan is a separate option from the footpath along the wetlands.
At the Moulin Bidon site, paths with wooden boardwalks run through wetlands. The name recalls a former watermill belonging to the Bidon family. Facilities on site include a picnic area, two bowling lanes, a large draughts board and an exhibition on biodiversity. If any particular facilities are important for your visit, check their current status beforehand; the facilities may change.
Art, astronomy and remembrance
At weekends, the Galerie d’Art Claude-Monet exhibits works by painters, sculptors or photographers from the region. For visitors interested in art, the weekend schedule is therefore a specific point to consider when planning. Jalle Astronomie offers skywatching and astrophotography using the club’s instruments. Access to the observatory on the Plaine Colette-Besson has been available since 2015. If you would like to plan one of these activities, check dates and visiting arrangements in advance.
The Souge Memorial was established in 1998 by the Association du Souvenir des Fusillés de Souge. A wooded path passes memorial steles listing the victims’ names, first names and ages, in order of execution date. During visits, the history of the executions, the different groups and those shot is presented at the respective steles. Access is arranged through the Association and is only possible with the army’s approval. Be sure to arrange a visit before travelling.
When choosing activities, different priorities emerge: the trails lead into the landscape, the gallery offers a weekend highlight, and prior arrangements are essential for the memorial. This lets you tailor your stay to the subjects that interest you and take into account the planning steps required for each.
