On the “La Laurence” route, the three loops already differ in length: 16, 32 and 45 kilometres. In Beychac-Et-Caillau, you can also explore the medieval character of Saint Marcel Church, the history of wine and cooperage, and the landscape between the Laurence and the Gestas. You can plan your stay around whichever matters most to you: architecture and art, a visit focused on wine, or a tour along one of the routes.
Saint Marcel Church and a 17th-century painting
Saint Marcel Church in Beychac has medieval origins and was founded in the Romanesque period. Its transept, choir and sanctuary have been preserved; the nave and bell tower date from the late 12th century. These architectural features give the church a distinctive profile that can be distinguished from its later furnishings.
The painting “Saint Marcel” is located in Saint-Marcel Church in the Beychac district. The oil painting on canvas dates from the 17th century and has been listed as protected movable cultural property since 10 December 1991. It depicts Pope Marcellus I, Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian by arrows. The church thus brings together architectural history and a later work of art as distinct ways to explore its cultural heritage.
Wine, cooperage and tastings
The Musée du Vin et de la Tonnellerie features an old cooper’s workshop and antique tools, as well as the original fermentation and pressing room and a traditional cellar with an earth floor. The visit lasts one hour. The different rooms and objects give the museum visit a specific focus on cooperage and winemaking; the duration helps you plan this part of your itinerary.
A visit to the Atelier du Vin et de la Tonnellerie ends with a guided tasting of three wines from the estate, accompanied by regional products. Planète Bordeaux offers a fun, interactive discovery tour of Bordeaux wines with six experience areas. Planète Bordeaux’s Cave des Bordeaux features more than 600 wine references. Together, these offer different ways to explore wine: a guided tour, a tasting and an extensive selection of wine references.
Landscape and the La Laurence route
Between the Laurence and the Gestas, rolling landscapes lie at elevations of 15 to 80 metres. Vineyards cover the plateaus, while meadows lie in the valleys. The contrast between plateaus and valleys shapes the area’s rural character.
The “La Laurence” route has three loops of 16, 32 and 45 kilometres. They pass through Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac, Beychac-Et-Caillau, Sallebœuf, Pompignac, Montussan, Yvrac and Saint-Loubès. The route lengths let you compare the distances involved; the starting point in Beychac-Et-Caillau is at the La Trappe car park.
