Five lakes and several cycling routes make Hostens a clear destination for spending time outdoors. The Domaine nature et de loisirs d’Hostens covers 730 hectares in the Landes girondines forest. It includes five lakes, one of which is designated for water sports and swimming. When planning your visit, you can focus on cycling, nature observation or spending time by the water. Swimming and access conditions may change seasonally; check them before your visit.

Forest, protected areas and nature observation

The Domaine nature et de loisirs d’Hostens is classified as an Espace Naturel Sensible and a Natura 2000 site. The Réserve biologique d’Hostens et des lagunes du Gât Mort covers 481.91 hectares. In the area around Lac de Bousquey, within the Réserve, the site is home to numerous protected plant and animal species. Thus, alongside the lakes, designated protected areas also shape the nature-focused attractions around Hostens.

Access to the Réserve is free; pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders may move around only on the signposted paths, including the GR®6. An educational trail and an ornithological observatory have been established at the Marais du Cla. These facilities offer different experiences: the educational trail introduces visitors to the natural environment, while the observatory is dedicated to birdwatching. Check local access conditions before your visit.

Cycling by distance or direction

For mountain biking, the Domaine has three green trails of 8, 11 and 16 kilometres, as well as optional red and black loops. The distances make the trail lengths easy to compare; the colours indicate the difficulty levels. This lets you make your choice based on two specific questions: which distance fits your plans, and which designated difficulty level suits you? Safety or fire restrictions may affect the trails and access.

Another cycling route is the Scandibérique. From Hostens, it follows a developed green route eastwards towards Bazas and then continues to Langon. The section near Hostens passes through the peaceful scenery of a pine forest. While the mountain bike trails can be distinguished by their lengths and difficulty colours, the Scandibérique offers a clear direction. Works or temporary restrictions may change the route; check the relevant conditions before setting off.

Lakes and the history of Lac d’Hostens

Lac d’Hostens has a history that goes beyond its present-day waterside setting: in the early 1930s, one of the largest lignite deposits lay beneath its clear waters. This historical background adds a glimpse into the area’s industrial past to its nature and water-based activities. If you would like to combine your time by the water with a different subject, you can shift your focus here from the landscape to history.

Horse riding in nature

Les Écuries du Lac d’Hostens offers horse riding activities in nature. These include introductory and discovery sessions, rides, vaulting and equestrian games. Rides take you through the Landes and around the lakes of Hostens. If you have a particular activity in mind, check its current availability with the provider.
