The Dune du Pilat moves 1 to 5 m east each year under the influence of prevailing winds and tides. At the small beaches of Pyla Sur Mer, access depends on the tide: they are accessible at low tide between Daniel Meller and La Corniche. Plan your beach visit according to the tide and check the relevant safety information.

Nature, trails and activities

The Dune du Pilat can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by bus and even by boat. If you plan to take the bus or boat, check the current transport arrangements in advance, as they may change.

The GR8 passes through Pyla Sur Mer and offers a lovely walk into the heart of the La Teste forest. If you plan to follow the route, check its course and signage on site. Alongside the ways of reaching the dune, this provides another hiking option.

At La Salie Nord beach, there is a glisse spot where surfing, kitesurfing and land sailing associations are active. If you are planning to try one of these activities, check the current offerings in advance: facilities and participating associations may change.

Architecture and local history

The history of the seaside resort includes several distinct periods: Pyla was founded in 1915 at the initiative of Daniel Meller. Between 1924 and 1927, Roger-Henri Expert had Villa Téthys built as one of five villas. The villa is arranged around a large central rotunda; its eastern garden brings together architecture, vegetation and water features. The entire villa and its garden were added to the historic monuments list by decree on January 16, 2001. A rotunda is a round room; at Villa Téthys, it forms the centre of the floor plan. The eastern garden creates a different focus: vegetation and water features shape the connection between architecture and outdoor space.

In summer, Villa Téthys opens for visits by reservation through the La Teste-de-Buch tourist office. As visits are seasonal and require a reservation, check the dates and booking options in advance.

Another chapter in the area’s heritage can be found at the Eden site: there is a bunker complex shaded by pine trees, the remains of a German battery from the Second World War.

Pyla among the pines

Pyla is described as a “town beneath the pines.” Building regulations emphasize protecting the trees and integrating buildings into the landscape. This means looking not only at individual attractions, but also at how trees and buildings together shape the character of the place.
