The Benedictine Priory of La Réole was founded in 977 on a limestone plateau above the Garonne. Other highlights include a château with distinctive defensive architecture, a short heritage trail and a cycling stage that follows the Canal de Garonne. These different scales make it possible to explore architectural history on foot or combine a visit to the town with a longer bike ride.

Architectural history between the Priory and the Château

The Priory was completely destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1577 and rebuilt in the 18th century. Its foundation, destruction and rebuilding clearly mark different phases in its history. The Château des Quat’Sos tells a different story: it was completely rebuilt in 1254 after being attacked from the roofs of the neighbouring Church of Saint-Pierre.

The Château’s design can also be described in specific terms. Its ground plan is an irregular quadrilateral, with four almost identical towers flanking the defensive walls. This draws attention to both its unusual layout and its fortifications. The town hall adds another historical perspective: it was built in the late 12th or early 13th century and is considered one of the oldest town halls in France.

Another aspect of the town’s history is reflected in a change of use. The former prison closed in 1934 and now hosts art exhibitions. Along with the town hall and the Château, it offers a different point of reference in time from the Priory, founded in the Middle Ages and rebuilt later.

Exploring the heritage on foot

For independent exploration, there is an urban heritage trail with information panels. The short trail is 1.7 kilometres long, takes about 1 to 2 hours and is considered easy. This makes it easy to plan as a self-contained, manageable part of your stay. If you would like to take a closer look at the architecture, you can use the route length and estimated duration to gauge how much time you have available.

The Jardin Public adds a scenic touch, with views over the Garonne and the plain. This view across the river and plain offers a different perspective from seeing the buildings on the town trail.

Cycling along the Canal de Garonne

La Réole is also a starting point for a cycling stage. The fourth stage of the Tour de Gironde à vélo from La Réole follows the Canal de Garonne and forms part of the Canal des Deux Mers cycling route. The fourth stage, from La Réole to Bazas, is 32.24 kilometres long. The section along the canal is considered leisurely; along the waterway, you will find lock-keepers’ houses, restaurants and guinguettes.

The two route options offer different ways to plan your time: the heritage trail covers 1.7 kilometres and takes about 1 to 2 hours, while the bike ride to Bazas is a 32.24-kilometre stage. This lets you compare a compact walk with a longer bike ride without treating them as the same kind of outing.

Planning your stay

The La Réole Tourist Office can advise on sights, accommodation, wineries, activities and events in the Bordeaux hinterland. This can help with planning if you would like to combine the heritage trail with other regional interests. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the architectural history of the Priory and the Château, art exhibitions in the former prison, or the cycling route along the canal.
