Grayan-Et-L'hôpital brings together a distinctive coastal landscape, traces of the Second World War and a historic pilgrimage route. At Plage du Gurp, sandy beach, dunes and numerous bunkers shape the character of the beach; in the village of L’Hôpital, the chapel has foundations dating from the 12th century. A golf practice facility and paths towards Étang de la Barreyre round out the options. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay: coast and history, cycling route or fishing.
Beach landscape and bunkers at Plage du Gurp
Plage du Gurp is a long sandy beach with an extensive dune area. Numerous bunkers from the Second World War also shape the beach’s historic character. Landscape and military history thus come together along this stretch of coast. If you would like to include cultural heritage in a coastal stay, Plage du Gurp offers a specific point of interest: both the beach itself and the bunkers are part of its distinctive character.
Golf as a focus in its own right
Balata Golf Practice offers a 9-hole practice course, a putting green, approach areas and a practice facility with ten teeing bays. Three of the bays are covered. The facility therefore includes a range of training areas, rather than just a single course: putting, approach shots and tee shots each have their own focus. If golf is one of your interests, you can consider this facility a separate option alongside the area’s coastal and cultural attractions.
Chapel and pilgrimage route in L’Hôpital
The village of L’Hôpital is home to the Chapel of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de l’Hôpital. Its foundations date from the 12th century. It also lies on the historic variant of the Way of St. James between Soulac-sur-Mer and Vendays-Montalivet. The chapel and the route can therefore be seen as two connected aspects of local history: the chapel provides a tangible historic landmark, while the route places it within a pilgrimage route that extends beyond the area.
The association Les Amis de la Chapelle Saint Jean Baptiste de l’Hôpital is working to open the chapel regularly to visitors and to organise cultural events there, such as conferences, concerts and exhibitions. For a specific visit, check opening arrangements and possible events in advance.
Cycling route and paths towards Étang de la Barreyre
On the historic Hospital variant of the Way of St. James, leave the Vélodyssée at the “Historic Hospital Trail” sign and follow the Amélie-Talais cycle route, marked with pilgrim signs, to the village of Grayan and onwards to L’Hôpital. This route provides a specific point of reference if you would like to explore the pilgrimage route by bike. As route conditions and signage may change, check both before setting off.
Another path leads from the edge of the forest towards Étang de la Barreyre and is closed to vehicles. Access to the forest may be subject to seasonal restrictions; check the conditions before your visit. The Étangs de la Barreyre also comprise four freshwater ponds where you can try fishing. If fishing is part of your plans, check access and participation requirements in advance.
