Aillas brings together three themes to consider when planning a trip: historic buildings, trails through the landscape, and a tour with tasting by appointment. The Église Notre-Dame d’Aillas and the ruins of the Château d’Aillas offer different historical perspectives. The Boucle de Cadane passes through forests, rural countryside, and heathland; the Boucle vélo n°11 starts on named roads heading towards Berthez. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore first decide whether culture, outdoor activity, or the tour that must be arranged in advance will shape your visit.

Church and Pilgrim Depiction

The Église Notre-Dame d’Aillas was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. Under the French system for historic monuments, it is partly classified, partly listed, and fully protected. Its date of construction, style, and protection status are distinct aspects of its cultural and historical significance. There is also a small bas-relief on the façade: it shows two pilgrims in bliauts, carrying walking staffs on their way to Compostela. This motif brings the pilgrimage connection to life and adds an image-based theme to the building’s history. Thus, both the Romanesque church and its depiction of the pilgrimage are central to understanding Aillas’s cultural and historical significance.

Ruins and Château History

The Château d’Aillas should be considered in terms of both its present state and its history: only ruins remain, and they were classified as historic monuments in 1886. After its reconstruction, the Château became the property of the d’Albret family and one of their residences. These details describe different periods: its role as a residence belongs to the Château’s history, while the ruins are what remains today. For orientation, the ruins stand at the start of the plateau, north of and above the village, along the D9 towards La Réole, at the place called La Ville.

The two historic sites offer different perspectives: at the church, the focus is on its date of construction, Romanesque style, and depiction of pilgrims; at the Château, it is on the ruins, their classification, and the site’s former history as a residence. This can help you choose a cultural focus based on the topics that interest you in Aillas.

Walking Trail and Cycling Route

The Boucle de Cadane is a walking trail starting from Aillas and passing through forests, rural countryside, and heathland in the Aillas area. It offers a landscape-focused option alongside the church and Château’s cultural and historical themes. The Boucle vélo n°11 Aillas starts in Aillas on the D110 and then follows the D10E9 towards Berthez. The two routes therefore differ not only in how you travel, but also in what guides you: landscapes define the walking trail, while the road layout and direction shape the cycling route. Road conditions may change; check them before setting off.

Tour with Tasting

The Oliveraie d’Aillas adds a tour with tasting to the historical and landscape themes. Tours with tastings are available by appointment throughout the year, Wednesday to Saturday, from 2 pm to 6 pm. If you would like to plan this visit, arrange it before travelling and confirm the details. This lets you factor the scheduled tour in as a separate planning item while choosing for yourself whether culture or landscapes will be the focus of your stay.
