Two castles and a chapel within a shared enclosure give Mazères a cultural focus; Église Notre-Dame adds architectural features from several centuries. Winegrowing and a cycling route to Château de Roquetaillade offer other specific topics to explore. For your plans, it is worth considering the château tour, church visit, wine and bike ride separately: their durations, access arrangements and starting points differ.

Roquetaillade: The Estate and Guided Tour

Roquetaillade consists of two castles and a chapel within a shared enclosure. Château de Roquetaillade has been listed as a historic monument since 1840, and Chapelle Saint-Michel since 1976. These dates therefore refer to different parts of the estate. The guided tour also gives your visit a clear structure: the interiors can only be visited as part of a one-hour guided tour. This includes the chapel, kitchen and park; fully furnished apartments and the work of Viollet-le-Duc are also shown. Allow an hour for the interior visit and check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

Église Notre-Dame and Its Building Phases

Église Notre-Dame is in the centre of the commune and dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its west façade was built in the 19th century; a Romanesque-style window is set into the south wall. The floor plan also offers a specific architectural point of interest: the nave is single-aisled and has no vault. The construction period, later façade and Romanesque window reflect different architectural periods, so the building cannot be attributed to just one era. The church can only be visited without a guide by appointment. If you plan to include the church in your itinerary, arrange your visit in advance.

Terrasses du Bazadais and Graves Winegrowing

Mazères has a landscape of the “Terrasses du Bazadais” type. More than 350 hectares of vineyards in the commune fall under the Graves appellation. Château Roquetaillade La Grange offers a specific perspective on winegrowing: the estate has 75 hectares of vineyards in the Graves region and overlooks the Brion valley. The figures refer to different scales—the vineyards across the commune and the vineyard area of a single estate.

A visit to Château Roquetaillade La Grange includes a look at century-old presses, a barrel cellar built across six levels and large stainless-steel tanks. Wine tastings are offered in 2026; check appointment arrangements in advance. This gives you two different ways to explore wine: take in the vineyards and landscape, or tour the facilities and enjoy a tasting.

Cycle to the Château

The “Roquetaillade par la piste cyclable” cycling route starts in Bazas and leads to Château de Roquetaillade. It is 36 kilometres long, rated easy, takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and has 126 metres of elevation gain. The starting point in Bazas is useful to know when planning; the route name does not mean the ride starts in Mazères. If you want to combine the cycling route with a château tour, allow for the roughly two-and-a-half-hour ride separately from the one-hour tour. This keeps the stated cycling time and the château visit as distinct blocks of time.

Bear in mind the guided tour at the château, the need to book an unguided church visit, and the cycling route’s starting point in Bazas.
