Saint-Christophe-Des-Bardes can be explored through tangible evidence of its architectural history and a landscape shaped by winegrowing. You can plan your visit around several highlights: the Église Saint-Christophe and its Romanesque portal, a circular walking route through wine-growing areas, and guided or self-guided visits at Château Champion. This lets you give different emphasis to cultural heritage, landscape and wine during your stay.

Church, portal and historical landmarks

The Église Saint-Christophe is a Romanesque church. Its sculpted portal dates from the 12th century; the church was extended in the 16th century and restored in the second half of the 19th century. Its architectural history therefore encompasses several clearly dated phases. The legal heritage designations are also distinct: the portal was classified as a historic monument by decree dated 1 December 1908, while the church was listed by decree dated 30 June 2000.

Another historical landmark in Saint-Christophe-Des-Bardes is the Moulin de Farguet, also known as the Moulin de Parsac. It was mentioned in 1289 as a reference point when the boundaries of the Juridiction de Saint-Émilion were being established. Across the Juridiction as a whole, the Moulin de Sarpe, built in 1798, is the last mill to have retained its roof and sails. These two references relate to different periods and contexts: one to the setting of a boundary, the other to a surviving feature of a mill.

The Combe de la Barde and the panorama

The Combe de la Barde cuts deep into the limestone plateau of Saint-Christophe-Des-Bardes and offers a characteristic landscape of the Saint-Émilion area. It brings together terraced vineyards, architecture built from Gironde stone and contemporary winery buildings. This combination makes the area more than just a view of vineyards: winegrowing, regional building styles and modern winery architecture all come together here.

The Haut-Sarpe viewpoint offers a different perspective, with its sweeping panorama across the northern side of the Juridiction de Saint-Émilion. Together, the Combe and the viewpoint offer two distinct ways to see the landscape: the layered composition of a single landscape area and a broad view across the northern part of the Juridiction.

Experience wine: guided or self-guided

By reservation, Château Champion in Saint-Christophe-Des-Bardes offers a one-hour guided tour of the family-run estate, which is farmed organically, its vineyards and winery facilities. Three wines are then tasted, including at least two Saint-Émilion Grands Crus. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, reserve the tour and confirm the date in advance.

The Sentier des Vignes at Château Champion is a free, self-guided alternative. QR code information and interpretive panels introduce plant and animal species found in the vineyard. The trail may be closed to the public while the vines are being treated; check whether it will be accessible on your planned visit date. The two options therefore differ both in format and in planning: a guided tour with tasting that requires a reservation, or a self-guided trail that may close while treatments are being carried out.

Walking loop through several appellations

The “A la croisée des appellations” walking loop starts in Saint-Christophe-Des-Bardes and is 11.1 km long. It takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes, is rated moderate and passes through wine-growing areas of various appellations beyond Saint-Émilion. Its distance, approximate duration and difficulty rating give you concrete details for planning your time. Compared with the one-hour visit at Château Champion, it takes up a considerably longer block of time. Route details may change, so check them again before setting out.
