At the confluence of the Canal de Garonne and the Garonne lies the Port de plaisance de Castets. It is a popular place for walkers, cyclists and recreational boaters. When planning your trip, this offers several ways to experience the same stretch of water: you can focus on the routes and boating, or make time for the cultural sights.

Waterways, Locks and Routes

Three locks on the Canal de Garonne are located in the Castets et Castillon area. The last of the three locks at Castets allows boats to travel in both directions between the Canal de Garonne and the Garonne. The banks, locks and bridges also define this canal setting: it is considered heritage of national interest because of its banks lined with century-old plane trees, the towpath, bridges and locks.

There are two different options for walking or cycling. A route along the voie verte runs from Castets-en-Dorthe to Fontet and is suitable for walking or cycling. The Boucle du Canal de Garonne follows the canal bank past lock-keepers’ houses, old mills and tobacco barns, then continues along the Garonne. The first route description names its endpoints and activities; the Boucle focuses on the landscape features along the way. You can choose based on whether the places mentioned or the sequence of sights matters more to you.

Architectural History and Places to Visit

The Château du Hamel brings together two building periods: it was first built in 1313–1314, and the present building was reconstructed in 1697. Its façades and roofs have been protected as historic monuments since 1963. Visits are possible by appointment from Easter to All Saints’ Day. Plan your visit within this period and confirm your appointment in advance.

The Église Saint-Louis is in the centre of Castets-en-Dorthe, near the lateral canal to the Garonne. Its eclectic style reflects 19th-century tastes. The nave walls feature Stations of the Cross paintings and stained-glass windows. During your visit, you can take in both the building’s design and the details inside the church. The church can be visited independently; check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Pont Eiffel was built in 1905. The bridge deck offers a viewpoint over the confluence of the Garonne and the canal. A free visit and year-round access are listed for the bridge; confirm the visiting arrangements before you travel.

When planning your trip, you can choose between different focuses: waterways and routes, architectural history, or a combination of the two. The visiting arrangements mentioned for the Château and Église Saint-Louis can help you include visits in your plans; the voie verte and the Boucle each offer a different perspective for walks and cycling trips.
