Saint-Symphorien can be explored through two very different themes: architectural and art history on the one hand, and nature and trails on the other. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these sides you would like to shape your stay most.

Church, Industrial Heritage and Contemporary Art

The main construction phase of the Église Saint-Symphorien took place in the 16th century. The church has been listed as a historic monument since December 21, 1925. The construction phase and listing date refer to two different points in history: one places the building’s origins in context, while the other marks the start of its protected status.

The railway workshops dating from the 19th century offer a different perspective on the history of the area. They are considered one of the few examples of their kind in Europe. Together with the church, they create a broad historical span from 16th-century architectural history to 19th-century railway architecture.

Since 2009, the Forêt d’Art Contemporain has pursued the goal of creating a regional approach to producing and presenting contemporary art in rural areas. The project hosts artists in residence, presents their work and develops a trail featuring a changing selection of artworks. It thus brings together artist residencies and exhibitions with the development of an art trail.

The Chalet Mauriac is now owned by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region and opens its doors to cultural professionals working in books, film and new forms of writing. The Region has commissioned ALCA to plan and deliver the writing residencies at the Chalet. This gives the house a clear cultural focus: it is a place for creative work and writing residencies.

One individual artwork adds its own distinctive touch: “7 Comètes à venir” by David Boeno dates from 2014 and invites visitors in Saint-Symphorien to take a walk through a park. Seven tree trunks line the park, their cut angles following the calculated elliptical orbits of seven comets. The idea behind the installation can therefore be understood through the alignment of the trunks and their connection to the comets’ paths.

Lagoons, the Hure and Routes

The Lagunes de Saint-Symphorien is a 33.98-hectare ZNIEFF natural area in Saint-Symphorien. It is designated as a site under the Habitats Directive (ZSC, SIC, PSIC) and lies within a Regional Nature Park. The Hure stream rises within the commune and is a tributary of the Ciron. Together, the lagoons and the Hure offer two distinct ways to explore the area’s natural features: a designated wetland and a watercourse with a clearly identified source and connection to a larger river system.

The “Balades à roulettes – Chalet François Mauriac” route crosses boardwalks offering views of wetlands and the La Hure stream. A hiking route in Saint-Symphorien also uses a section of the Mios–Bazas cycle path. It follows the route of the former Compagnie des Chemins de Fer Economiques railway line. The route descriptions therefore offer different points of reference: one focuses on boardwalks and views of wetlands and the stream, while the other uses a section of the cycle path and its historic route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
