Around Blansko District, cave spaces, archaeological finds and buildings with their own distinctive histories come together. The sights offer different points of interest: sometimes natural formations take centre stage, sometimes traces of early settlement or architecture. You can explore the area according to the themes that interest you most.
Caves, Finds and Viewpoints
Býčí skála is a National Nature Reserve and part of the second-longest cave system in the Czech Republic. The Býčí skála–Rudické propadání cave system is more than 18 kilometres long. Kateřinská Cave also combines natural surroundings with history: its main chamber is the largest publicly accessible cave space in the Czech Republic. The cave contains evidence of human use in the Stone Age, as well as bones of Quaternary animals. Concerts are also held in the main chamber, which is known for its acoustics.
The viewpoints at Macocha offer two different height measurements: the upper one is 138 metres above the bottom of the abyss, while the lower one is 92 metres above its lower section. A hiking trail leads from the Macocha viewpoint towards the Punkva Caves. An eco-train runs between Skalní Mlýn and the Punkva Caves, while a cable car connects the caves with the Macocha cottage. In this way, landscape and practical orientation are among the different aspects of a visit to the cave area.
Castles, Collections and History
Rájec nad Svitavou Castle is a National Cultural Monument. It was built between 1763 and 1769 in the French Neoclassical style. The greenhouses are a seasonal attraction: they are open to the public in February and March during the camellia bloom. At Lysice Castle, the garden and fig house form a route that visitors can explore independently. The two sites thus offer different ways to experience architecture and garden culture.
The Blanensko archaeological exhibition displays Hallstatt finds from Býčí skála. The remains of at least 40 people were found in the cave. Replicas, an audio guide and Braille labels help blind visitors access the exhibition. Blansko's industrial history offers another perspective on the region's past: the Blansko ironworks developed into the largest cast-iron producer in Moravia and Austrian Silesia, exporting its products worldwide. Blansko is also home to the wooden Church of Saint Paraskeva, a reminder of a change of location: it was moved here from Carpathian Ruthenia.
The places described also offer different forms of access. The ground floor of the Dům přírody Moravského krasu is fully wheelchair accessible. The forested ruin of New Castle near Blansko can be reached on foot; there is a castle tavern there at weekends. Alongside historical content, these sites therefore provide practical visitor information.
Trails, Views and Recreation
The Podvrší lookout tower is 49 metres high and can be reached by climbing 168 green iron steps. It stands beside a blue-marked hiking trail and cycling route 5116 between Blansko and Boskovice. There is also a seasonal tourist information centre at the tower. Its height, steps and routes make the tower a clearly defined destination for anyone interested in viewpoints or trails.
Those who prefer spending time by the water can enjoy nature-friendly swimming, shady areas beneath trees and a snack stand at the Pálava Reservoir in Blansko. Together with the caves, viewpoints and historic sites, the area around Blansko District offers not just one experience, but a range of options to suit different interests. When looking for a suitable base for your trip, you can first consider whether caves and archaeology, architectural and industrial history, or trails and recreation matter most to your stay.
