Velenov lies beneath the peaks of the Drahanská vrchovina and is surrounded by extensive forests. The character of the village is also shaped by a stream along its eastern edge, bodies of water and a recreational area within the municipal cadastral area, a viewpoint with a wide panorama, and traces of local history. For your stay, you can focus on nature, views, cultural history, or an event date.
Landscape Between Forest and Water
The Orlový potok flows along the eastern edge of Velenov and empties into a southeastern bay of the Boskovice Reservoir. The Suchý recreational area and Sušský Pond are also within Velenov’s cadastral area. This brings together a stream connected to the reservoir and two other named landscape features. The different details help distinguish the waterscape from the wider municipal area.
West of Velenov, the Vratíkov Nature Reserve lies nearby. It is a karst area with several inaccessible caves. Near Sklep Cave is also an important archaeological site, where tools used by Magdalenian hunters and bones of prehistoric animals were discovered. These are two distinct points of interest: Vratíkov is known for its karst and inaccessible caves, while the site near Sklep relates to the area’s archaeological history.
Views and Time Outdoors
From the Vyhlídka na Číhátkách Ptáčníka Velena viewpoint, the panorama stretches across the Českomoravská vysočina, Kunštátsko and Boskovicko, as far as Boskovice Castle. The view thus connects several named landscape regions with a specific landmark. The viewpoint was opened to the public on 20 November 2010; before visiting, it is advisable to check current access information. There is a fire pit at the viewpoint where visitors can grill sausages, provided they leave the fire pit safe and properly restored afterwards.
Local History in Specific Details
A municipal bell tower stands in the centre of Velenov. The bell was purchased after the war. House No. 10 is built from hewn beams. At a cross in Velenov, a white marble plaque is mounted on a sandstone pedestal. Its inscription reads: “Dedicated to the honour and glory of God by the young men and maidens of Velenov, 1914.” The plaque adds a dated dedication to the architectural details, while the bell tower links the site to the post-war period.
Events Throughout the Year
The traditional November walk, “Pochod kolem katastru,” follows the municipality’s cadastral boundary. If you are travelling for the event, check the date for the relevant year. This makes it easy to plan the walk as part of your trip without assuming it has a fixed date.
The 2026 edition of the VESUF Fest will take place at Pastýřská louka between Suchý and Velenov. Over the weekend, there will be more than 50 types of beer from over 20 small breweries, as well as food; the offerings may vary from one edition to another. Check the current festival dates and programme for your travel year. The 2026 municipal calendar also lists the Pohár Drahanské vrchoviny – kola for September; check the date again for future editions.
