Závist combines visible village history with a rural setting: the village green is marked by a brick bell tower, there is a circular well in Závist, and nearby forests offer access to outdoor recreation. The village also has recurring festivals and a marked cycling route along the northern edge of the cadastral area. If you are looking for accommodation in Závist, you can decide whether village life and history or cycling and nature should play a greater part in your stay.

Bell Tower, Stone Cross and Well

The brick bell tower on the village green was built in 1833 by Mariana Šumanová, the widow of a local innkeeper, and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It underwent extensive repairs in 2014. The year it was built and its later repairs mark two different stages in its history; at the same time, the tower remains a permanent landmark for finding your way around the village.

The stone cross next to the chapel bears the year 1857 and features stone symbolism of the Holy Trinity. The same religious motif thus appears once in the dedication of the tower and once in the design of the cross; however, the two historic features are in different locations. The circular well was repaired in 2000 and continues to receive water from the former municipal water supply, whose springs were located above the village. If you mainly want to see the water flowing, check locally whether the well is flowing at the time.

Village Life Throughout the Year

The village festivals take place on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity; their exact dates may vary from year to year. The Masopust parade and Závist village festival are considered the biggest social events of the year in Závist. The maypole is also part of local tradition: it is erected on the village green.

At the traditional Christmas gathering, residents meet around the Christmas tree on the village green. The event includes a ceremonial lighting of the tree and a performance by children. The library, under the auspices of the municipality, hosts cultural events several times a year, including a kite festival and a St. Nicholas celebration. As the dates of the village festivals and individual library events may vary, check the dates for your travel period.

Forests and Cycling Route

Závist offers access to nearby forests and nature for outdoor recreation. Marked cycling route 5221 runs along the northern edge of the cadastral area. If you are planning to use this route for a cycling trip, check its status before you travel. No marked hiking trail passes through the cadastral area. This distinguishes a specific cycling route along the edge of the area from the forests’ general recreational appeal.

Getting Here and Finding Your Way Around

There is a bus stop with pull-in bays and a shelter on road I/43 in the built-up part of Závist. A separate footpath connects the bus stop to the village. At the same time, busy road I/43 divides Závist into two parts and makes it harder to cross safely between them. If your journeys take you to both parts of the village, take this division into account when finding your way around.

The nearest railway station is in Rájec-Jestřebí, about 10 km away, on ČD railway line No. 260 between Prague, Česká Třebová and Brno. The bus stop in the built-up area and the more distant railway station are different points of reference for your journey. Check connections and timetables for your travel day before planning your arrival.
