In the Church of St. Andrew, remains of rare 14th-century frescoes were uncovered and restored in 2003–2004. This offers a concrete starting point for exploring Roubanina’s history: alongside the frescoes, the church’s layout and construction history also shape the cultural character of the village. Historical traces of theatre and crafts add to the picture of the local past.

St. Andrew’s: Architecture and Services

The church has an elongated floor plan with a slightly recessed five-sided chancel. It was extensively remodelled in 1923–1924, when a nave and a storage room were added. The remains of the 14th-century frescoes and the early 20th-century alterations belong to different periods in the history of the same building. This lets you understand the church both through its form and through its construction and conservation history. For those interested in ecclesiastical architecture, a distinctive architectural feature here is paired with historical change.

Sunday services at St. Andrew’s are listed at 9:30 a.m. during the 2nd and 4th liturgical weeks; services for the current week are also listed. If you are planning to attend a service, check the current parish notice in advance.

Local History: Trade Routes, Theatre and Crafts

Roubanina was first mentioned in writing in 1356. The village was founded close to a crossroads of important trade routes. These details complement each other: the year refers to the first written mention, while the crossroads provides the historical context for the village’s founding.

The Sokol theatre group in Roubanina performed a total of 28 plays from 1922 to 1933. A further 14 productions followed between 1945 and 1962; its activities ended in 1962. The dates show two separate periods in the village’s theatrical life. Alongside the church’s architectural and artistic traces, this history offers a different cultural perspective: it focuses on community performances rather than architecture.

In historic Roubanina, tradespeople included bakers, carpenters, blacksmiths, coopers, wheelwrights, shoemakers, tailors and dressmakers. These trades ranged from food production to woodworking, metalworking, clothing and wagon-making. Crafts are therefore another way to understand the village’s history.

The built heritage also includes the late-medieval Roubanina fortress, which originally formed part of a farmstead. Today, only a slight rise remains in the garden of house no. 4. At St. Andrew’s, the floor plan and alterations shape the architectural history; at the fortress, the slight remaining rise is the main feature. This makes it possible to compare different kinds of architectural traces.

Hilly Setting and Cycle Routes

Roubanina lies in hilly countryside at an elevation of 469 m; the Zavadilka stream flows through the village. Marked cycle routes run through the surrounding area. These offer different points of interest when planning a trip: the elevation characterises the landscape, while the cycle routes are an additional option for guests interested in cycling. If you would like to combine cultural history with cycling, you can take both interests into account when choosing your destination.

A municipal announcement dated 5 March 2026 listed RÓBANINSKÉ SLIVOVIČKE as its 11th edition. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the latest date information in advance.
