Boskovice brings together cultural and historical themes with opportunities to spend time in natural surroundings. When choosing a stay, you can distinguish between the castle, the permanent exhibition and outdoor activities. The themes differ, too: the castle offers an architectural feature and views, the exhibition explores local storytelling traditions, and the arboretum and nature trail offer different types of routes.
Castle and Storytelling Traditions
Boskovice Castle is home to a 26-metre-deep wooden box well operated by a treadwheel. Its depth and mechanical operation give the well a distinctly technical character. The castle also offers views of the surrounding countryside.
In the cellar rooms of the Hraběcà rezidence is the permanent exhibition “Fairy Tales and Legends of the Boskovice Region”, which opened in April 2019. It draws on a rich oral folk tradition that has been recorded in the region since the mid-19th century. Visitors can read almost a hundred local stories and listen to legends in the Malohaná dialect. Reading and listening thus offer two different ways into the local storytelling tradition: visitors encounter the stories as text, and the legends also in their dialect form.
Castle History and Landscape
Zámek Boskovice Castle is set in an extensive English-style landscape park. The conversion of a monastery into a grand residence for František Xaver Ditrichstein began in 1819 and was completed in 1826. This historical transformation thus marked a change from monastery to grand residence; the start and completion dates give this development a clear timeframe.
The Ĺ melcovna Arboretum is a nearly nine-hectare nature, education and recreation area open to the public. It has almost three kilometres of naturally surfaced paths and trails, as well as rest areas. It thus combines a connection with nature and educational value with a practical choice of routes; the rest areas offer places to pause along the way. You can explore the arboretum on foot along its paths.
The Hradnà okruh nature trail is 6.2 kilometres long and starts in the square in Boskovice. The arboretum paths are part of a public area with several functions; Hradnà okruh, by contrast, is a single nature trail with a fixed starting point. When comparing these options for your stay, you can consider not only the route length but also whether you prefer a recreational area with rest spots or a named nature trail. This makes the nature trail more than twice as long as the arboretum’s paths.
The viewing gallery in the Boskovice Town Hall tower opened to visitors in 2010. If you would like to include a visit in your plans, check the latest visitor information beforehand.
