Two cycle routes cross in the town square of Doubravice nad Svitavou, while the cultural sights are spread across several locations. They include a church complex with a statue opposite it, monuments in the town square and on the outskirts, and the castle ruins above the valley of the Nešůrky stream. The castle is about 1.5 kilometres from the town. For planning, it helps to consider these locations separately: the town square, the outskirts and the somewhat more distant castle site each offer a different focus.

Rail and cycle routes as points of reference

Doubravice nad Svitavou has a railway stop on the Brno–Česká Třebová line. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date. The cycle routes can also be distinguished by their courses: Route 5202 passes through the town and crosses Route 5204 in the town square. Route 5204 runs through the district of Klemov to Doubravice nad Svitavou and continues from the town square towards Kuničky. For cyclists, the square is therefore a shared point of reference; the named directions also show which places are connected by the two routes.

Church complex and monuments in town

The Church of St John the Baptist complex comprises several architectural elements. The statue of St John of Nepomuk is part of the church complex and stands opposite it to the northeast. The Baroque church dates from 1717 and was completely rebuilt after the fire of 1760. A Baroque mortuary chapel is also built into the cemetery wall. The dates refer to two different stages in the building’s history: the Baroque construction phase and the later alterations following the fire.

At the southern end of the town square, a stone sculpture of St Sebastian stands within a balustraded enclosure; the year 1713 is engraved on it. A roughly two-metre-high, plastered masonry wayside shrine is located on the southern edge of town near the cemetery, on the right-hand, south side of the road towards Rájec. The Baroque cross at the town exit towards Boskovice bears the year 1799 and is considered an important monument of local significance. The two dates can thus be matched to their locations: 1713 in the town square, and 1799 at the exit towards Boskovice.

The Boží muka wayside shrine also combines an architectural style with a long history: the masonry structure features Baroque forms and is already marked on maps from the First Military Survey. It is considered an important element in the landscape and a testament to popular piety in Doubravice nad Svitavou.

Castle ruins, river weir and Maypole

Doubravice Castle was built in the last third of the 13th century and had already been abandoned by 1528. Its ruins lie above the valley of the Nešůrky stream, about 1.5 kilometres from Doubravice nad Svitavou. This places the medieval castle site in a different setting from the monuments in the town square and on the outskirts. Another piece of engineering can be found on the Svitava: the weir is still operational, regulates the river and is used to generate electricity.

The annual local calendar includes raising the Maypole in Svobody Square. The event is organised jointly by the volunteer fire brigade in Doubravice nad Svitavou and the Městys Doubravice nad Svitavou. The Maypole is raised without mechanical aids. If you would like to include this tradition in your travel plans, check the date for the relevant year.
