Velké Opatovice offers several ways to explore the town during your stay: local history and cartography, nature topics along the Hanýsek nature trail, and a Koupaliště with pools and slides. You can plan your visit by distinguishing the attractions by subject and type of visit. An exhibition, a nature trail designed for pedestrians, and a bathing facility each have a different focus.
Local History and Cartography
The history of Velké Opatovice is the main focus at the Muzeum a Památník města. It also houses local history collections and the Herberstein family’s historic library. The Moravské kartografické centrum covers a different subject: it presents the development of cartography in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia from the earliest times to the present day. The difference from local history lies in the subject, geographical scope and time period: one focuses on the history of Velké Opatovice, while the other covers the development of maps in the three named regions from the earliest times to today. One admission ticket grants entry to the Moravské kartografické centrum and the Památník města. Before travelling, check whether this ticketing arrangement is still in effect.
Castle, Church and a Relief
Velké Opatovice Castle was built in the Baroque style in 1757. The Church of St George was first mentioned in writing in 1392. These dates refer to different things: the year the castle was built and the church’s first written record. On the wall behind the altar is a relief of St George, created by Karel Otáhal in 1951. Thus, the church’s history has not only a written historical reference but also a specific work of art created at a later date. The Opatovická borovice was the Czech Tree of the Year in 2014.
The Hanýsek Nature Trail
The Hanýsek nature trail starts at Šraňky in Velké Opatovice and follows field and forest paths. It is intended mainly for pedestrians. Nine information boards describe natural attractions in the northern part of Blansko District. Unlike the exhibitions, a visit here is centred on the trail itself: the boards focus on nature, while the trail follows the aforementioned field and forest paths. Hanýsek therefore combines exercise with information about natural attractions. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Pools and Slides at the Koupaliště
The Koupaliště in Velké Opatovice has a swimming pool, a leisure pool and a children’s pool. It also has a 70-metre water slide and another slide. Unlike the cultural and nature attractions, the focus here is on water-based activities. Seasonal opening times may vary; check the current hours before visiting.
