A chapel with a teardrop-shaped floor plan, a 13th-century church and views over the Křetínka Valley offer different ways to explore Sulíkov. There are also marked hiking and cycling trails, as well as cultural attractions in the surrounding area. You can focus on architectural and local history, the landscape, or a combination of the two. Kunštát Castle and the Cave of the Blaník Knights are nearby, but outside Sulíkov.
Church and Chapel: Two Historical Periods
The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene dates back to the 13th century. Its chancel tower is probably of early Gothic origin and is one of the few exceptionally well-documented examples in Moravia. The church thus combines a medieval date with a distinctive feature of its tower, described with due caution.
The Chapel of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine has a teardrop-shaped floor plan. This shape symbolizes Saint Monica’s tears for her son, Saint Augustine. The chapel was consecrated on 30 August 1998. Its floor plan, religious symbolism and consecration date make the chapel a cultural history topic in its own right, alongside the older church.
Vřesice and the Landscape Around Sulíkov
There was extensive pottery production in the local district of Vřesice; the craft reached its peak in the 1930s and 1940s. This history adds a crafts theme to the religious architectural history. Vřesice lies in the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park and in the protected zone of the Křetínka Reservoir. Sulíkov lies on the northern edge of the nature park.
Above Vřesice, Povětrňák Hill offers views of the Boskovice Furrow, the Drahany Highlands and the Křetínka Reservoir. There used to be a windmill there. From Brablec Hill, the view extends across the entire Křetínka Valley. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: Povětrňák looks out over several named landscapes and the reservoir, while Brablec takes in the valley as a whole.
Šibeník Hill rises northwest of Sulíkov; from its summit, there are views of the surrounding area. The nearby forests yield plentiful mushrooms and blueberries when climatic conditions are suitable. Their actual availability varies.
Attractions Nearby
At nearby Kunštát Castle, the interiors showcase the domestic life of its last aristocratic owners and the oldest sections of the original castle. The Cave of the Blaník Knights in Rudka offers a different theme: it contains sculptures by the sculptor Stanislav Rolínek, and the surrounding area is laid out like a park. The castle and cave therefore offer different points of interest—the history of a castle on the one hand, and sculpture in park-like surroundings on the other.
Hiking and Cycling
Marked hiking trails and local cycling routes pass through Sulíkov. Marked cycling route 5085 follows the Kunštát–Rudka–Sulíkov–Kněževes–Hartmanice route in the direction of Polička. Check the route numbering and signs before setting off. Local trail markers are also a useful guide when hiking.
There are several options for planning your trip: the churches and their different historical associations, the viewpoints, or a tour along marked trails. The named cycling route provides a specific corridor in the direction of Polička; for other routes, follow the signs on site. If you include nearby attractions, keep in mind that they are outside Sulíkov.
