Úsobrno brings together several clearly distinct themes for planning your trip: the history of glassmaking, archaeological traces on the Durana, church architecture and a nature reserve with beech forests and individual large fir trees. The hillfort site points to a significantly older period than the Karlshütte, founded in 1827; the church, museum and mills add to these historical points of reference. This allows you to consider whether cultural history, nature or a combination of both should shape your stay. A long-distance cycling route through Úsobrno also opens up an additional possible focus.

Glassmaking history and the Durana nature reserve

The Mýtočínský potok meanders below the glassworks of Úsobrno through the valley of the Durana nature reserve. The protected area comprises a unique complex of beech forests with individual large fir trees. The stream, valley and forest provide concrete points of reference for the nature theme. The glassmaking history offers a distinct cultural-historical perspective: Count Karl Maria Strachwitz founded the Karlshütte, named after him, in Úsobrno in 1827. The two themes appeal to different interests: the Durana represents a protected area and its vegetation, while the Karlshütte represents the history of glassmaking. You can weigh nature and cultural heritage separately or combine them as two facets of the same travel destination.

Hillfort and church: different historical layers

The hillfort site is located on the Durana. It was a provincial centre mentioned in forged documents from the second half of the 11th century. In the second half of the 13th century, it fell into disrepair. The fortification is almost circular, has a diameter of 50 to 60 metres and is bounded by a broad rampart and a ditch. The dimensions give a concrete idea of the site, while the documentary references and its later decline provide its chronological context.

The present-day Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Úsobrno stands on the site of a demolished chapel and was built between 1948 and 1951. The organ dates from 1850 and was comprehensively restored in 2002. The instrument is therefore older than the current church building; the church’s history here spans several historical layers. Together with the medieval history of the hillfort site, this creates a broad chronological framework for the cultural history of the town.

Museum and mills

The municipal museum of Úsobrno presents the history of glassmaking and agriculture, historical photographs of the municipality, municipal chronicles, as well as the banners of Úsobrno and its volunteer fire brigade. Glassmaking and agriculture connect two different themes in the town’s history; photographs and chronicles complement them with visual and written records. Visits are by prior arrangement with the municipal office. Arrange your visit in advance and check the current contact details.

The Brichtovský Mill is one of the town’s notable sights. The Horní Mill is the oldest preserved building in Úsobrno; it was built around 1610 and is not accessible. The mills thus represent different historical points of reference: the Brichtovský Mill is highlighted for its role as a sight, while the Horní Mill is notable for its age and restricted access.

Cycling through Úsobrno

A long-distance cycling route also runs through Úsobrno. Near Trnávka, it splits in two directions: to Hradec Králové and to Jeseník; the route is called the Jantarová stezka. Trnávka is the junction between the two stated destinations. Check the signage and route conditions before setting out. Cycling can thus become a separate focus in your plans alongside the cultural and nature themes.
