On the edge of the Drahanská vrchovina, Valchov’s character is shaped by its hilly, wooded landscape, cultivated fields, meadows and the Valchovka. Two signposted walking trails and cycle route No. 5227 provide specific destinations for planning an outing. The village and its surroundings also have buildings and traces of history to explore.

Landscape and village character

The landscape is predominantly hilly and wooded, with cultivated fields and meadows. The Valchovka flows through Valchov. The surroundings therefore include a mix of woodland, open cultivated land and water. If you would like to combine scenery and local history during your stay, you can focus on the trails and buildings: the walking destinations lead into the surrounding area, while the chapel and mill offer other perspectives on Valchov.

Walking and cycling

The red-marked walking trail passes through Valchov and connects the village with Boskovice and Žďárná. A yellow-marked walking trail starts in the village centre and leads to Sloup and the Sloupsko-Šošůvské Caves. These destinations can help you choose a route: Boskovice and Žďárná are linked to Valchov by the red route, while the yellow one leads to Sloup and the caves. Before setting out, check the current signage for the yellow trail.

Cycle route No. 5227 also passes through Valchov. It runs through Boskovice, Hrádkov, Valchov, Velenov, Suchý, Skalky, Benešov and Pavlov. The route number and sequence of villages provide a guide for the cycling route; the walking trails are distinguished by their colour markings and destinations. You can choose an outing based on whether you would rather walk to the destinations listed or focus on the cycle route through the villages named above.

Buildings and local history

The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul was consecrated on 29 June 2003. Woodcarver Ivo KrajĂÄŤek created the design of the front wall. Its consecration and artistic detail offer two specific points of interest for anyone interested in religious buildings.

The former mill and millpond offer a different perspective on architectural history. The mill is an example of folk architecture, and its exterior appearance has been preserved. The chapel and mill therefore represent different types of buildings: religious architecture on the one hand, and a folk-architecture building on the other. Iron ore was also mined in the area around Valchov. West of the village, remains of a saltpetre works can be found near a forester’s cottage. If you include these remains in your plans, check their condition on site.

Choose your focus

To choose a route, you can use the destinations and markings described above as a guide: the red walking trail is associated with Boskovice and Žďárná, while the yellow one leads to Sloup and the caves. For cyclists, route number 5227 and its sequence of villages offer a different starting point for planning. Those more interested in history can choose between the chapel, the former mill, and the recorded traces of mining and the saltpetre works. This way, your choice of outing can be guided by the actual points of interest in Valchov.
