Svitávka lies in the broad valley of the Svitava. Local points of interest include Baroque architecture, the history of the Löw-Beer family, fossils and traces of earlier settlement. The landscape is also precisely defined: Svitávka belongs to the Malá Haná region, while the boundary of the Boskovická brázda tectonic depression runs immediately west of the town. This makes it possible to consider the river valley, landscape region and geological formation as distinct features of the surroundings.

Valley, fossils and the wooded Hradisko

Hradisko is a wooded hill directly above Svitávka, rising above the confluence of the Svitava and the Semíč stream. Numerous fossils can be found in several shale outcrops on the eastern slope, including the rare fossil of a Permian arachnid. The hill therefore represents not only the landscape above the town, but also a specific link to geological history.

Geology also features on the walking trail to Hradisko: information panel No. 4 explains the geology of Hradisko and the morphology of the surrounding area. The visible foundations of a medieval watchtower and the remains of a chapel are preserved at the summit. The panel and the structural remains highlight different aspects: one explains geological formations, while the others point to the history of the place.

Church, monument and Löw-Beer villas

The parish Church of St. John the Baptist is a Baroque building dating from 1703. The square is home to a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a cultural monument and a distinctive landmark. The church and statue represent two different forms of cultural heritage: a religious building and a monument in a public space.

Svitávka’s architectural character also includes two grand Löw-Beer villas. The family lived in them for a time. The large villa has an almost castle-like appearance and combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements. In contrast, the church’s construction date provides a clear point of reference in time, while the villa brings together various stylistic elements in a single building. Visitors interested in architecture will therefore find more here than just one historical building style.

The Svitávka Museum and its themes

The Svitávka Museum was established at the Löw-Beer estate. It covers the history of the Svitávka area from the Permian period through medieval settlement to the present day. This chronological arc connects early geological history with the history of settlement and the town today. The exhibition also includes films about Svitávka’s history, which are suitable for schoolchildren to watch.

The museum and local buildings offer different ways of exploring the past: the exhibition brings together the area’s history across long periods, while the church, statue and villas illustrate specific types of buildings and monuments. In this way, cultural history can be explored both through its development over time and through individual buildings and monuments.

Getting there and a dated event

Svitávka lies on the Brno–Česká Třebová railway corridor. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date.

A specific cultural event from the recent past is the 20th Svitávecký jarmark tradičních řemesel (Svitávka Traditional Crafts Fair): it took place in Svitávka on Saturday, 6 September 2025. This edition featured live music and a cultural programme, with a fire show in the evening. These programme details refer to the 2025 edition.
