Krhov lies at the northern foot of Malý Chlum, which is listed as 488 m above sea level. Forests stretch south and east of the village; Krhov also lies on the right bank of the Úmoří stream. The fortified archaeological site of Krhov “Malý Chlum” is located at the summit of the Malý Chlum mesa. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you are drawn to the area primarily by the archaeological site, its history or its cycling routes.
Location and archaeological site
The site has an elongated oval layout. Its axes measure 261 m in a northeast–southwest direction and 70 m in a northwest–southeast direction, making the longer axis almost four times as long as the shorter one. The axes describe the site’s shape in two directions; in addition, the site is said to have originally covered 1.5 ha. This is equivalent to an original area of 15,000 m². The settlement of Huť Sv. Antonie is an important landmark for access: the site is most easily reached from there. Huť Sv. Antonie lies about 500 m southeast of the foot of Malý Chlum. For orientation, these are two distinct reference points: the summit marks the location of the site, while the settlement is the most accessible starting point. Huť Sv. Antonie is a shared reference point for the cycling route and the site: the settlement lies along Route 5201 and is also the most accessible starting point for reaching the site. This shared location makes it easier to consider cycling and visiting the archaeological site together when planning your trip.
Mining history and other traces
Krhov was founded as a mining settlement; its first written mention dates from 1409. Iron ore has been mined in the area around Krhov since the 15th century; in later years, shale and coal were also extracted there. West of Krhov, the remains of the earth embankment of the unfinished Vienna–Wrocław motorway are visible. Alongside the history of the settlement and mining, there is another subject to explore: the history of an unfinished transport link in the area.
Chapels and nature trail
The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus dates from 1933; a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands on the edge of Krhov. The Malý a Velký Chlum nature trail was officially opened on 14 April 2013. If you plan to include the nature trail in your visit, check the current trail conditions in advance.
