The valleys of the Svitava and Bělá shape Lhota Rapotina: river erosion formed the landscape, whose steep slopes are covered in forest. The Lebeďák Nature Monument and the area’s Baroque heritage add two further points of interest. If you choose a destination based on its landscape and local history, you can explore the natural environment, architecture and traces of the past here as separate themes.
River Valleys and Protected Habitats
The valleys were formed by the erosion of the Svitava and Bělá rivers and are flanked by steep, forested slopes. The cadastral area of the municipality is also home to the Lebeďák Nature Monument, which covers 9.281 ha. Its protected habitats include a distinctive community of thermophilous dwarf oak forests, as well as rocky steppes with xerothermophytic vegetation. This technical term refers to plant communities in dry, warm locations and identifies the rocky steppes as a distinct ecological feature. The area is equivalent to around 93,000 square metres.
At 539 m, Strážka is the highest point in the cadastral area. This adds a topographical reference to the natural environment, while Lebeďák is characterised above all by its protected forest and steppe habitats. Elevation, landform and habitat thus offer different ways of looking at the same landscape: altitude, formation and ecological significance.
Baroque Heritage and Local History
The Baroque Church of St. Lawrence was built in 1717 on the site of an older chapel. The year of construction and the earlier building can thus be considered together. The large onion-shaped roof leads into a lantern topped by a finial. The sequence of roof, lantern and top makes the architecture easier to describe in specific terms, beyond its general classification as Baroque.
The Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a monument of considerable art-historical value, stands in the central area of the village square. As an independent example of Baroque sculpture, it complements the church architecture with another cultural highlight.
Another historical trace leads to Horní mlýn: the site was a paper mill, and a watermark documents it as early as 1663. The local history thus encompasses paper production as well as sacred architecture and art. Settlement reached the area of Lhota Rapotina in the 12th century; the earliest written mention of the village, probably, dates from 1349. These details answer different historical questions: one establishes when the area was settled, while the other identifies the earliest probable written reference.
