Discover Rudice through its karst, windmill history and geology. The Rudické propadání–Býčí skála cave system illustrates the scale of the underground karst; the windmill, geopark and chapel bring its architecture and rock formations into focus. When planning your trip, it is important to consider how you can visit each site: the underground chambers are not open to the public, and the exhibits in the Windmill Museum can only be viewed on a guided tour.

Karst and access to the cave system

Rudické propadání is designated a national natural monument. The Rudické propadání–Býčí skála cave system has around 13 kilometres of passages and is the second-longest cave system in the Czech Republic. Its designation as a natural monument identifies its protected status, while the length of its passages indicates the scale of the system—two different aspects of the same natural feature.

The underground chambers of Rudické propadání are not open to the public. An exception is made for visits as part of speleology courses and accompanied by experienced instructors. Official rules may change. If you wish to include this exception in your plans, check the current regulations again before visiting.

Windmill, museum and geopark

The Rudice windmill is of the Dutch type. Matěj and Františka Ševčík built it in 1865. Its design, year of construction and builders are all specifically identified: the mill is not merely a general landmark in the history of the village, but a building with a documented date of construction and named builders.

The Windmill Museum has a clear condition for visitors: admission and viewing the exhibits are only possible when accompanied by a guide. If the museum is an important part of your itinerary, factor in the guided-tour requirement and check in advance when a visit is possible.

A small geopark is located right next to the windmill. Its rock samples come from the Moravian Karst and the Drahanská vrchovina Highlands. Alongside the historic building, you can therefore see examples from two named geological regions. The location of the geopark is clear: it is next to the windmill.

Kaolin quarry, circular trail and chapel

The walls of the Seč Kaolin Quarry display shades of white, yellow, orange and red. These colours are caused by kaolin deposits. This geological feature differs from the rock samples in the geopark: here, deposits colour the quarry walls, while the samples there come from the Moravian Karst and the Drahanská vrchovina Highlands.

If you would like to include a named route in your plans, there is the circular trail “Do Rudice k větrnému mlýnu a ke kaolínovému lomu Seč”. It is 6.5 kilometres long. This gives you a specific distance to plan for; the circular format also distinguishes it from a visit that requires a guided tour or from the caves, which have restricted access.

Another local landmark is the Chapel of Saint Barbara, located at the intersection of two avenues. It has double-skin masonry: stone on the outside and brick on the inside. Here, the term describes not a single wall made of one material, but two layers of different construction. Its location and construction are two distinct features that help identify the chapel.

Plan your stay around your interests

When choosing a holiday apartment in Rudice, consider what you are most interested in: architectural history, rocks or a circular trail with a set distance. The caves are not ordinarily open for public visits, and the museum can only be visited with a guide. You can take these conditions into account separately when planning, rather than treating all the attractions as if they could be visited in the same way.

Rudice therefore offers several different points of interest for a stay: Rudické propadání, designated a national natural monument; the history of the windmill; rock samples in the small geopark; the colours of the Seč Kaolin Quarry; and the chapel’s architecture. These details can help you plan your stay around your interests, while keeping the access requirements for the cave system and museum in mind.
